Howard was diagnosed with Tourette syndrome at a fairly early age. His symptoms began to appear when he was in the fifth grade. Before Howard was a teenager, Tim Mulqueen, a one time assistant coach for the United States U-17 men's national soccer team, saw his potential at a soccer camp Howard attended and took the boy under his wing.
