sounds pretty much the same as in Ireland... These taxes are nothing but robbery ! you guys are so lucky in the UK
All vehicles here up 30 years old comes under a vehicle registration tax which is calculated from the market value of the vehicle.
so new cars are 30% more expensive to the Irish punter. Its cheaper for a UK punter to buy a new or used car from Ireland right now with exchange rates & registration taxes waivered as the car is export. ..... also a heads up if your looking for something special...
we don't salt or grit the roads like the UK in the winter so Irish classic cars tend to be in better nick here from a corrosion perspective. On a regular basis I have contact with car transportation companies ...at the moment most of our prestige cars are being purchased for UK export.
Classic vehicles younger than 30 years come under another category called 'Classic or Collectable' they carry a different & inflated registration tax
and I hear stories where it is more than 30% ..... all decided by our corrupt and thieving government , we are Europeans when it its suits.
Over 30 years vintage category 200 quid registration tax only.
what some governments are doing is technically illegal under EU law. In Ireland we are fined every year for breaching the EU laws ..no problem the government will pay it as the revenue collected far exceeds the fines imposed. But if your caught driving a UK or a EU reg'd car and haven't paid the taxes they'll will impound your car until you settle the hefty registration tax & fines imposed.
Yes its crazy this is just a taste of what its like to own or purchase a classic car abroad ..then the road tax again inflated. A Lotus Esprit as previously mentioned would cost €1300 or £1000 stg for road tax....then inflated insurance , road tolls etc etc.
.... count your blessings guys you don't realise how good you have it in the UK or indeed many other EU countries.
