Transport for London ULEZ Exemption

Postby GDTDMC12 » Fri May 19, 2023 11:15 am

I thought I would share my experience of applying for ULEZ exemption with Transport for London (TfL) to exempt my D when the zone expands in August this year.

I went to their website and followed links to their ULEZ page but was confused about how to specifically apply for Historic vehicle tax class exemptions. I then searched online and various car clubs had step by step guides, that were similar, so I followed those. These had me following the online exemption process, selecting various options, including stating it was a non-uk vehicle. I scanned and uploaded my V5C along with the required photos of the car (front, back, both sides, interior) and then submitted the application. A couple of days later I received a letter via email in pdf form stating the application was rejected on the basis I was not eligible for Wheelchair exemption since my car was not a "Van"!.

I then rang TfL and was told there's another way to register for historic vehicle exemption which I'll explain below.

1 - Got to http://www.tfl.gov.uk
2 - Click on the button/link for Congestion Charge
3 - Scroll down on page to Contact Us Panel and click link
4 - Scroll down to button that says "Make an enquiry"
5 - Fill in the form:
a - Type of enquiry = ULEZ Enquiry
b - Your message = give a comment that you have a vehicle with historic tax class and wish to apply for ULEZ exemption
c - Supporting Documentation = upload your full V5C document, and following photos of your car (front, back, both sides, interior)
6 - There is no requirement to complete the "Additional information" section
7 - Click on continue, confirm details on the following page and follow the prompts to submit.

The only different to the above that I did was to sign in to my TFL "London Road User Charging" account to ensure it registered my car against my account. You might want to set an account up following point 2 above when the options appears in the top right of the screen.

I hope this helps

Gareth.

I didnt think you had to do anything?

When i checked via their online checker, the delorean does show up as needing to pay the charge, however, going through another option and it came back with something like "you dont have to pay" and "we are aware of the vehicle being historic and exempt".

Personally, i dont plan to use mine in london... ever! But i guess it should be done really for when it expands. I guess you could just contest the fine if one did arrive via the post but i assume this would likely be the more aggravating approach.

Thanks for the guide

Now the Deloreans are Tax and MOT exempt they automatically become ULEZ exempt, I did contact them and check though as when you put my reg in on their checker it still comes up as needing to pay but that is a fault with there system and they have confirmed it is exempt

Ah good. Thanks for the clarification as my reg comes up as needing to pay also.

However, since the next step is a pay per mile system, i wonder how long before they decide they wont be exempt. I can see more people will start to drive classic cars again
