Frame off Stage 2

Postby mnickels » Sat Jul 25, 2009 12:44 pm

As my chassis is nearly ready to go to prostrip, I need to get a list now of parts necessary for rebuilding the suspension, brakes, fuel and cooling systems. So far I have all my Superflex bushes and the kit from Jez from DPNW. I know what components are involved but things like whether I need adjustable control arms etc or not and whether certain parts just need cleaned and a lick of paint. Also where the best place is to buy certain components would be helpful too.

Hi Matthew, the plastic clips for all the pipes are the main ones that can't be done subsequently. Presumably, you're having the chassis galvanised and powder coated? Get the suspension arms all done at the same time as the chassis - certainly my lot have no trouble doing them in black and everything else in grey all part of the same batch.

Depending on how far you want to go with the restoration: brake flexi hoses, coolant pipe hose joiners, heater matrix hoses, air con hoses, (and hose clips for all), fuel accumulator & hoses, fuel pump hoses, gearshift bushes, brake pipes (esp that infernal joiner mid way along the backbone), heatshield wrap for the hoses near the exhaust crossover, gearbox mounts, engine mounts........ I could go on.

One tip - before the chassis is re-coated, drill a hole directly beneath the gearshift pivot bolt mount. That thng can be a real headache to re-tap after it's been galvanised.

Yes the plan is to galvanise then powder coat the chassis. Thanks for the list, certainly a few things I wouldn't have thought about.

Just bought a set of SPAX shocks at Delorean Club rates (thanks guys) as well as a clip kit and lower springs from Ed. Hopefully I will have a lot of stuff here when the chassis is finished. First I have to get it to Nottingham and back. Looks like I may have to drive it over and back myself though. I love spending the money though

Well done Matthew - and where else can you buy Spax shocks on a Sunday?! ;) - One of the many benefits of free club membership.

Sounds like you're really "going to town" then? Is that the fourth chassis Nottingham will have done in a year? 8-)

To be honest, I want it done this time round and not to be making a habit of taking the car apart this much. Finance is going to be the only hold up. All this attending events, and family holidays business really takes its toll on funds
