Al,

They'll probably charge you £100 "admin" or "increase on your screen excess" to use a "non-associated" windscreen supplier. Despite what your policy document states in the T & C

Check this before you go ahead.

I had a right old ding dong by doing it myself. They would only pay for the glass itself, less my £75 excess, less another £100 "admin fee" for using a non associated fitter (because they all declined to work on a "classic" car) The non associated fitter in the end was me (and I could therefore not claim for any labour time) so they effectively tried to charge me as a policy holder a £100 admin fee to process my claim, which was in effect far less value than if they'd have paid an associated company who would have marked up the screen price and added labour costs!
Suffice to say litigation threats and withdrawal of two High end Car club associations with the particular insurer came into force.
I ended up following this up (over the heads of the insurer) directly with the insurance Ombudsman and Lloyds of London their underwriters directly in their complaints department, to get some form of clarity for Windscreen Claims on Classic cars.

Let us know how you get on.

Hi mate

No increase, and no admin charge

I made sure before even starting and then again when it was approved .

Any more news on this Al?

My insurance with RH is up for renewal, premium has gone up again. £334 - with salvage and an agreed value of 30k...

Just considering my options before committing to another year.

Cheers

How cheap is ridiculous Dan? My renewal with Footman James - with my "DeLorean Club discount" - is £149. That seemed pretty low to me.

My renewal is £273.46 I covered 3000 miles in the last 12months I decided to up my limit to 5000 miles/year as I am using the car almost daily now and was within 30 miles of my 3000 mile limit a fortnight before my policy ended so I effectively parked up the car for 2weeks.

I had a new screen fitted last week only £50 excess, fitted by auto glass, the chap did a very good job I have to say (not that it matters who the insurer is).

Underwritten by Hiscox which are a pretty rock solid underwriter, sorted by a local broker with whom I have a good relationship, I appreciate that this kind of stuff isn't always people's top priority, and of course there are cheaper options out there.
