Hi,

Having purchased my DeLorean a year ago it's now nearing completion and I'm about to go after insurance quotes. I'm a complete novice, new to this world of classic car insurance but I've been told that I should check if the insurance companies I get quotes from have particular restrictions in relation to tyre ratings. Do you know following you contact with Hugo if Lancaster Insurance has indicated such restrictions since I understand that in the past some companies have refused to pay out following an accident based on the tyres fitted and their speed rating?

Cheers

Gareth.

Hi Gareth,

Interesting, I've not come across that one before, but will certainly check for you.

Alistair, did you set up a club discount with Lancaster? They mentioned they have a 'DeLorean Owners Club' on their books... :?

Yes, by the sounds of it, Andre's spoken to a number of us this week and as a result now has a much better view of a DeLorean!

Top bloke though, comes across well and has a very genuine interest in the car. He was also talking about putting together a special bespoke package for us club owners in the future, when they have enough people signed up. For now though, they are working on a case by case basis, as obviously we all have different criteria they have to meet.

Personally, I'm very happy with the deal they offered me - particularly as it will save me £130 against my current insurers renewal quote!

As I said, they go on a case by case basis, so different circumstances will affect each individual quote.

Just a few exceptions which might affect people.

This insurance only covers you to drive your DeLorean only.
It doesn't cover Prom hire, only wedding.
The mileage is limited to 2,000 or 4,000 miles per year.
Salvage is under Category B,C,D but not A (totalled like tin foil).
Tyres are not an issue, provided they are replaced like for like and fitted by a specialist.
Includes UK and Homestart Breakdown - European is extra.

Thanks Al for sourcing this contact. Hopefully will be beneficial to club members going forward.

Tyres "like for like" doesn't clarify if a 235/60/r15 98T will be accepted by the insurance compared to the original spec 235/60/r15 98W, despite the actual to speed of the car.

If they can confirm that the T speed rating will be accepted and added as clarification on the policy then that sounds alright as a policy (based on what you've described).

Always read the small print

Hi All,

I have also been in contact with Lancaster over the past couple of weeks and would reiterate Carl's comments that in Andre we have a good contact.

I have this morning taken out my insurance for the year with them for what I believe to be a very competitive premium.

As we all know, it's not just the price which is important and I am happy that I have got good cover which includes:

Fully comprehensive for me and named driver
Third party cover to drive other vehicles
U.K. Breakdown and homestart cover
Agreed value
Windscreen cover
90 days European motoring
Standard salvage retention on C&D, negotiable on B but not on A. (Pretty much industry standard)

With the caveats that yes, each case is obviously different and you don't really know how good an insurance is until you need to implement it, I would recommend this company based on my experience so far.

I would also add that this insurer is trying hard to get business from DeLorean Club UK members and I believe that increased volume may well reflect in even better premiums for our club members moving forwards.

Give them a try, you have nothing to lose!

Cheers
