Leaving a DeLorean / storage

Postby jerzybondov » Mon Aug 03, 2009 10:21 am

I know there's various things that you need to watch out for when leaving a D, but I was wondering if I could get some opinions on timescales for the various problems that might arise when leaving the car for a while.

Flat battery: 2 weeks (not too worried on mine as have a kill switch but sure it will still try to flatten itself)

Tyre flat spots: ?

Fuel system going dodgy: ?

My car's up in Essex at the mo and it might end up being 4-5 weeks between starts. This should be OK shouldn't it? I was under the impression 2 months was the point at which it gets a bit dodgy...

Ill look after it for you Gez then I can sell mine ;)

Seriously though I would try to get somone to move the car forwards and backwards once a week so it isn't resting on the tyres all that time. If its run once a month you shoudnt have any fuel problems with it. The battery should last if its isolated, if it doesn't then its time for a new battery.

Leaving it locked away in the garage out of sight is probably the best way to enjoy the car anyway ;)

No worries on 4 - 5 weeks.

I would just disconnect the battery and pump the tyres up a bit to prevent any possible flat spots.

Cool - I'll see if I can persuade my Dad to push it forwards a few feet! :D

But yes, in terms of the best way to enjoy the car - there is an argument to be said for enjoying the idea of it, more than the reality of it. Perhaps I should keep a diary of 'enjoyment' on an out of 10 basis, probably scoring way higher when I'm nowhere near the car

I can definately verify that a "killswitched" battery lasts for ages, with no apparent loss of charge at all - tested on both of my "play cars" to extremes! In fact last year the kit car went into the barn in July and didn't come out until May this year - I didn't even unlock the door to check it was still there during that time.
I didn't do any of the things you're supposed to do and just started it up (first time). Other than a seized clutch it was just fine, and by the time I had "grinded" it into 3rd gear that was fixed as well. 8-)

If your concerned by tyre flat spots, put the car on axle stands ;)
