The Grand Tour, UK to Mille Miglia 2015

Postby Biff » Mon Apr 20, 2015 6:39 pm

Hi, :text-imnewhere: Newish, but alittle back-ground.......

But last year bought a Delorean as an impulse, late at night, buy off US Ebay. I bought it unseen & untested (Yes, I know! :? ) but it seemed like a nice one with recent money spent & I just trusted the seller.
New Years Day, it turns up at my house on a transporter.
I had a good walk around, it is basicly a good but used dry state car, 2 previous owners, Spent first 24 years in Nevada.........

Plays OK for me! Your purchase story sounds not unlike mine. Late night, drunk, US eBay auction (although I'd been watching the car for days and quizzed the seller in advance)

Can I ask how many $k you had to part with to get it?

Sorry if YouTube link doesn't work but point of post was after numerous little jobs, with still a few to go, I got it road registered last month, which got me thinking what I was going to do with this impulse purchase.
And then I saw this documentary about the Mille Miglia, a famous road rally head every year in Northern Italy on open roads.
What is not to like? Italy in spring, good food, good wine & marvellous cars!
Why not use this old, cool 'GT' for a Grand Tour?
Why not indeed, ferry is booked for the 9th of May......... Just need to get some miles under my belt & get that AC working now!
Advice, recommendations, must see's, Fellow tourers welcome!

:? Just me then? Voices but no picture!
Haha, Yeah, If I'd thought about it too much, I wouldn't of done it! Seller was as honest as they come though, pointed out all the things that were broken, damaged or didn't work.

Not really, we're very flexible.
1500hr ferry to Calais,
Plan to book a Hotel at/near Saint-Quentin.
And then head over & through Switzerland for a couple of mountain passes before heading down into Milan and the over to Brescia for the start of the Mille Miglia. :dmcdoors:
Google maps say its possible in about 20hrs non-stop, 3 days at 7 hrs per day, plus a day for emergencies/crisis management!

Well we have planned to call into CERN on the way back, apparently the do free tours of the accelerator. Should make a good back-drop for the Delorean! :D
But definitely open to all suggestions.

I wish you all the very best on your road trip, You are certainly a braver man than me driving a Delorean all that way. TBH I wouldn't trust my car as far as I can drive it. I found the more you do to them, restoration, TLC etc etc, the more they will want and try and piss you off and let you down, yet there are other members of the club who don't do a thing to there cars and they never let them down!!! When I go to Heaven i'm going to punch JZ in the face!
