I would take the engine out now and remove the heads and see what you have - it's the only way to clear the galleries correctly if they are indeed blocked

Cant agree more.

Would it be safe to say that many of these cars need this sort of work carried out at this stage? I was shocked to find the amount of crap I did inside my engine recently - see attached pics (inc. how the block looks now after vapour blasting). The aluminium is poor quality and corrodes easily. Sitting up for years with old coolant/water wont help things. The mechanic has been through 3 engines and they were all the same.

Remove one of the plugs on the side of the engine and have a look inside.

Wow interesting. If I had a wish list it's that a flush through will go someway to helping getting the engine at least running - get the car mot'd and registered. The removal and rebuild of the engine would then take place at a later date.
That engine looks really nice after it was blasted.

It's difficult to tell without looking at the valley, hoses, inside the water pump - my fault I thought that was all in bits
