vin 11789 is "up in the air"

Postby Spudmurphy » Mon Sep 18, 2017 2:48 pm

well, it had to happen at some point.

The car is now up on blocks (4 concrete blocks per wheel) doubled up giving me a lift of about 9 inches.

Popping into Selco's on the way home to get it higher still.

I received a call from a guy who is a retired Volvo Mechanic (he owned his own Volvo business here in Cardiff)
he knows the PRV engine well, he also has a liking for VW's and guitars - so I'm sure we will get on ok?

So the engine recommissioning will get underway - hope to get the rear off the car tonight to get good access. I bloody hope all goes ok 8-)

Exactly.

Kevin, why don't you put the blocks on the jacking points?

GIve it a nudge and they will be!!

And not to be telling a very experienced granny how to suck big fat eggs, and I know you are well versed at working on cars etc, but I would definitely (and only once) caution against using concrete block/ bricks etc under the car. You know how easily they can crack and crumble... (Tho I know many people do, just my 2p worth)

Then the car would never get done!! :D

Cheers

The wheels need to be off anything in my opinion
If the transmission were to creep in park it would move or at least try to

Remove the driveshafts or jack up further and remove wheels
Blocks under jack points

Thank you all very much for your ideas/suggestions. I know you only have my safety in mind.
The concrete blocks are rated at 14N so will easily support the weight. I also have axle stands if I want to be "tugging about" underneath - did I just say that?
I won't be working on the wheels - it's just to get the damn thing up so I can clamber underneath - I will chock the wheels and have taken all the air out of the front tires.

Jacking points? - well in all honesty the frame looks in great shape - when I looked at the risks - one would be that the j points fail?
There is always a risk in some shape or form I guess .

At least I'll now be starting on the main bit of the project.

Ah well, fingers crossed eh lads?

... oh, and sageth ye not on the engine cover - I have a cunning plan for that after I take it off - should only take an hour to sort that out!

Are you replacing the tyres then? As you'll fuck them with all the air out and the cars weight on them. Hello flat spots, they'll be lovely to drive on

I don't think the tyres are in anyway roadworthy
Kevin be careful as it has been known for cars in storage with flat tyres to warp the wheels
They then need copious amounts of weights to make them run true
