Help and ideas with front DMC grill

Postby Dave M » Fri Mar 02, 2018 5:15 pm

Got a problem fixing the grill to my car - as with most other parts it looks like the previous owner found that if a part didn’t fit well then it was stuck on with silicone ( same it was at the factory I hear you all say ) so the same goes with the grill - some of the brass fittings are missing or badly fixed in the wrong position - I have bought from the club some new fixings both for grill and front fascia so I was planning on removing all 8 brass lugs and starting again - maybe fixing in with fibre glass but knowing the exact place is going to be tricky and also they are inserted at an angle - I suppose the ideal soloution would be obtaining a template ?????? - apart from that the grill is in v good condition - any ideas

I'm sure I've got a bag of brass lugs in the shed. I'll dig them out and you can have them.

Althrough the shed is a shit tip and i can't guarentee finding them

Think I have enough lugs it’s just the positioning of them on the grill as it’s been butchered and the holes are “ all over the place “ thinking of taking them all out - cleaning out the holes then cutting up some fibreglass matting into very small pieces mixing with the resin - then filling all the holes then re drilling them - but they need to be accurate and at the correct angle

I replaced my brass lugs with stainless steel bolts, so no 8astard can pull the grill off. If it was me I'd do this:-
Take the brass lugs out and clean up the crap around the thread that's left. Make good with JB Weld.
For those positions where the thread has disappeared, you could either JB Weld a threaded collar into the void or thread the JB weld.
Use stainless nuts and bolts instead of the brass lugs and you should be ok - I mean it's not like you are bolting together the Tyne bridge.

I too have brass lugs lying around - ... and eye nose where dey are ;)
