Ive just spotted a very small coolant leak coming from the passenger pipe about midway on the car. This would explain why the car fans didnt kick in till the 220 mark as clearly air is getting into the system. I havent been under to inspect properly but the leak is minute. Theres like a drop just hanging there.

Im fairly certain the leak is not coming from the rubber hose connectors as the pipe is dry either side of the droplet. My question is, can i repair the metal pipe at all? I was thinking of using one of those exhaust patch kits or will i need to replace the whole pipe?

Have a good luck under it first and make sure all the hose clamps are tight. Are the hoses all original or have you replaced them? Assuming it is one of the metal pipes, I would just replace it.

I kinda wanted to avoid changing just one pipe if i can. I havent replaced any of the pipes or rubber tubes yet as I kinda want to replace the whole lot. im fairly sure its a pipe but cant confirm just yet. I just wanted a temporary fix for now.

I really dont want to change one pipe, fill up the system again, bleed it to find that another pipe goes the same way a little down the line. Yes its an expensive upgrade but i want to do things properly and once and not worry about it again for a while. So my thoughts were to get a temp fix, get it through an MOT and whilst waiting the registering process to then change all the pipes and rubber tubes then. That way by the time ive done all that i can finally start enjoying the car

Buy the whole lot (ally and silicone kits) and just change that one pipe just now to get it driving?

Well ill check it out first. It may be worth just changing the pipe cos the system needs bleeding again anyway. I guess i shouldnt lose too much coolant but i still think that changing the whole lot in one go is the better option going forward.

It’s probably leaked up the top and run down the pipe
I wouldn’t worry too much chasing that at the moment as once it’s driven thing will be expanding contracting

And that wouldn’t cause the fans not to kick in

So ive checked under the car and cannot find the source of this minute leak. Took the car out for a drive up and down the road for 20mins or so and the car seemed to behave as it should.

The fans came on at the right level, turned off the same. I do think i will need to upgrade the rad and the fans at some point and definitely get the screw in otterstat/pipe. And damn does that engine get hot!

Whilst under the car, i noticed that where the gearbox joins the engine, there is oil there. Can this have come from my leaky crankshaft seal as oil has a tendency to travel?

Could be a number of things, they do often weep from the crank seal (mines done it for the 13 yrs I’ve owned it & never got any worse) or could be something higher up & running down

Could also be the driveshaft lip seal on the gearbox on the drivers side, but more than likely the flywheel seal as Julian says

(or even both like on mine)

God i hope not. That all seems like a big job or at least an expensive one. Im not surprised if it is though as the car is nearing 40.

Im guessing these would be advisories on an mot?

Lets say it is the flywheel or something else, can chris n do this work or is there someone else that any know of?

Damn this glorious, annoying, love, hate marmite car
