Or is this stainless trimming an early cars speed trial excercise, like a number of other early tub lightening modifications which my car has??

My 3/4 panels (or is it just the LHS one? i can't remember) have been butchered like this too.

This can be caused by the metal sheet being pulled into the press when the panel is stamped. Particularly in an area where the flat sheet is stretched into the concave shape. If the sheet of steel is off to one side when sat in the press, the metal is drawn in and after the process the trimming of the "flashings" is limited to a given distance (width of flange) if the metal is pulled inside this during stamping, the edge can look butchered when trimmed as there isn't enough material in places to give a straight/uniform edge.

This could be the answer for some, but mine was most definitely cut. There's marks to show heating of the metal where the new edge's are (cut edge).

Mines also cut as well. It must have been cut after it was fitted because its also cut through the mounting bracket as well  No idea why.

If its been cut while on the car, the only reasonable conclusion is that it was done to gain clearance? for fitting the rear Facia?
Misguided or not, I can't think of any other reason to do this.

It has been cut after fitting, I thought perhaps for clearance for the fascia? And was wondering if this was due to the crap early tub, but apparently not...

Just inherent crapness through the whole production run!

Cheers
