Coolant leak ???

Postby Dave M » Tue Apr 16, 2019 9:20 pm

Just picking all your brains regarding my coolant leak - before I bought the car it had quite a bit of work done by PJ GRADY - head gaskets, chains - all hoses but losing about a pint every 50 miles or so since I have owned it - can’t see any wet - drips or moisture just this dry residue - just can’t see where it’s coming from - doesn’t seem to be anything on garage floor either - any ideas ?

I would it pressure tested

It looks like there has been a leak around the pump area

It could be leaking into the valley and evarporating with the heat so you don’t see it sloshing over.

+1 for the pressure test.. It should hold steady at 1 bar (15psi) no problem.. It won't take much pressure to reveal a leak, or hear it hissing out. could be loose hose clamp, or a rip in the hose. hopefully something simple.

Yes I suppose the best way is a simple pressure test but a old school pressure tester that fits on the bayonet cap of the stainless steel expansion tank - if I get a one of the newer type tester which is the best hose to fit it to ?

I have only used the bayonet style pressure tester that goes on via the cap.. Never used newer other type, so I'm not sure..
But I'd guess the smaller 1/4inch pipe coming out just above the fat pipe below the cap on front of the bottle.. You would nt get any coolant leaking out of that one or very little :?
