Have you tested for a spark at the spark plug?

Answer no .started work on fuel pump and came backe to symptoms above. Wish to discard easier answers before searching for problems and taking the top of the engine apart. But Nick you are right all avenues now have to disprove the others. I now have less time pressure and will potter through the system . Does that return line kink change anything in the injector manifold set up.

Un-kink the hose

HI Nick Sorry off line for a while and should have clarified -kinked hose was also old and hardened as shown so of course was replaced with new fuel rated hose together with in tank pick up, return hose and filter from Arran. Hence no chance of restricted flow now in return system. Proprietary in HT line tester shows spark at plug in cylinder while cranking. Will carry out as many standard checks re fuel/ electrical for elimination and list here for further help to save your time if necessary.
Thanks Chris

Thanks AB
Tests as follows
Coil Impedance Primary in middle of limits in workshop manual. Secondary 6800 - 6400 Manual says approx 7000 Ohms.
Old battery +/- 12.04v. New battery fitted charged 12.7-13 v
In line ignition tester between plug HT lead and in cylinder plug shows firing when cranked
RPM relay jumped 30-87 . Fuel pump did not run and relay wiring hot. Need to repeat to confirm.
Fuel pump does run in ignition 2pos for 4 secs But not always. No sensor plate resistance after 4 sec prime. Should there be? Accumulator has always tested before as okay- holds press for + 15 min. Will carry out your checks on return home + coil voltage checks. Working solo so should have "cranker" to assist tonight/tomorrow
Will update Chris

Hi Have found oddball delivery pipe leaking into fuel pump boot. Pump does run 2 ticks /sec when 30-87 jumped but sensor plate does not give audio injector operation .
Will fix delivery leak to restore primary press and post back.

For reference when you push down on the air metering flap, this is the noise you should hear from the injectors.

Back Work ceased over weekend. New fuel pump fitted --old one sounded feeble --all new pick up, delivery and return pipes fitted in trunk section no leaks RPM RELAY jumped 30-87 pump runs vigorously relay socket and wires very hot?
Sensor plate solid pressure-- no injector noise at 3mm or any deflection ( thanks Mike for the video as I didn't know what noise was required ) and nothing holding a screwdriver on them. Engine fires begins to run then dies under above condition. Fuel pump sounds to enter prime mode for a few seconds as it dies. So fuel starvation after Cold start valve prime due low injector pressure ? Spark tested as above .Also Coil voltage increases from +\- 5v rising through 9 v while cranking before firing.
I Think ---- The only thing that brought on this no start condition was my replacing that kinked return pipe to the tank which released full instead of 10-15% return flow and 0 back pressure to distributor. If Primary pressure was set up WITH this back pressure 5.3-5.5bar may not being achieved to open injectors.
Discuss. I am out of knowledge and in your hands,!!! Chris
