Going nuts! car idles fine but zero power with throttle!

Postby Doynk2 » Wed Oct 16, 2019 12:56 pm

Hello all and thanks for having me! :text-imnewhere:
having owned a DeLorean now for 2 years, i have struggled to ever get the thing to work properly for more than a few weeks at a time. Finally, i have hit a brick wall and am completely stuck.

in a nut shell, the car starts, but as soon as you touch the throttle its splutters and attempts to stall.. release the throttle and it is back to a perfect idle again. the car does drive but like its misfiring or something... spluttery and rubbish, it will get to 50mph but it takes time

Now, i have done quite a lot to the car such as new breaks, discs, steering rack, fuel pump, lambda and rpm relay, clutch, clutch slave and master etc etc the list goes on but i just now can't go anywhere and it is driving me nuts!!

i have read up on the wonderful fuel injection system which seems to be bonkers but have devised that there must be a problem here, or with the throttle switch.... or with the cold and hot start vacuum hose set up.... or with the fuel mixture... or the relays.... or the fuel accumulation valve... but i just cant work it out.. am i missing something here?

any help much appreciated!

Have you replaced the HT leads and spark plugs? I had a problem similar with mine and it turned out to be a dodgy HT lead.

If you have already changed them then check the firing order is correct.

Also check the fuel hoses are correct. I had similar problems and eventually found 2 hoses crossed on the metering head.

It might be useful to say where you're from as there could be a club member nearby who could have a look at it for you.

Hey guys, I'm in Weybridge, Surrey... I had changed the coil but not leads... So will give that a go. Would love that to be it. Also, I'll check the fuel lines. . . .

If you replacing the leads
Change the cap and rotor arm at the same time

Mine was having issues starting and also pauses during acceleration - turns out one of the clips holding my cap down was broken and the rotor arm was half burnt through.

Changed the cap, arm, leads and clips and it sorted it.

Good to take the engine down to the valley anyway for a clean up.

take the air filter off , with the engine running, if you lightly depress the air meter flap the engine should stop immediately. If the engine picks up revs then you are running too lean.
This is just a "ball park" check and got my engine so I could at least rev it. Mine still needs a damn good tune up though.
