Ive just stumbled across this. It would appear that only cars registered before the 7th jan 1981 will be able to apply next year. However, those that fall into this timeframe cant actually register till april 2021. Everyone else will have to wait till april 2022.

The simple fact is, we can only go by what we read on the website.

You then get further information with relation to the above, and it not being valid until April of that same year. That is purely what I am going on. It's what anyone can go on. Making up your own mind that it must be different due to a doubt that this could possibly be the system doesn't change what's written in black and white on the official site(s). It doesn't make sense. I completely agree with you. But I accept it because it's simply the sort of hair-brained scheme I'd expect our government to conjure up to keep people providing juice for the goverment to squeeze for as long as they can reasonably get away with it, but still appear to be "giving" something to the little man out of the generosity of their good hearts. cough cough splutter splutter.

Well i wouldnt say its unofficial (unless you mean non government or course) but i decided to try and find another owners club that have actually become tax exempt. At least these guys laid it out simply without coming across like theyre contradicting themselves every other sentence.

So sorry jez, its looking like you cant apply till april of 2022. Geez what a shit bloody system this is. England really does suck and im still flabbergasted that people want to sneak in and come here.

It's probably all a mute point anyway. With the huge bills our country is racking up with Covid, they'll probably abolish classic car free road tax on March 31st 2022, just to piss us all off even more.

So are we all clear that cars are mot exempt the month they reach 40 years on the log book registration date, then they can get tax exemption the January of the year after registration unless it was in the first 7days of that year? IE car reg 6th jan 1981, is tax exempt in 2021. Car reg 8th of Jan 1981 is tax exempt Jan 2022. Mot exemption however for both is Jan 1981.

That seems to be the case. MOT just seems to fall into place in the month of registration, but in many cases, including mine, the V5 doesn't reflect the actual VIN plate month, but instead some other arbitrary month of the same year. In my case, December. Even though my car is a May '81 build. So if I get my car MOT'd next May, then that will be the last obligatory MOT the car will have to undergo unless i'm prepared to not drive it until May 2022 and skip the last MOT (due to the V5 saying December). But you are still obliged to make sure the vehicle is safe to drive on the road. Who would determine that without an MOT? It would be easy to miss something without an official MOT for many people. And again, i'd hesitate to suggest it may also affect your insurance if someone argues the vehicle was unsafe for any reason. Basically, it's a minefield.

Well I just changed my 3 wheel van to Historic tax. Piece of piss to do, took the V5 to the post office along with a form to declare its exempt from needing an MOT. V5 came back 2 weeks later job done. So come April 2021, I will do the same with my D as mine is on the system as a Jan 81 car

Interestingly I can't find anything saying the MOT exemption starts each tax year, the form simply says 'over 40 years old' so that should be valid from January.

I am sure I am not the only one to have been told that I've had my last MOT. It was in September, April 81 build date. First registered June 81.
