SORN INSURANCE

Postby Corsair » Sat Sep 12, 2020 6:06 pm

Just for those taking their car off the road for winter and declaring SORN, I have been warned that some insurance companies will not honour their policies ( Surprise! ) Best to inform them just in case. I have no specific companies in mind but if they change underwriters things can change.

On what basis do they come up with that? I’ve never seen a policy that says ‘your car must be on the road’

My car is on a zero miles policy. They know it’s off the road and going nowhere. They know it was in bits for months on end. They never said anything with any of that was not permitted.

Don't shoot the messenger!
Just advice to me from a reputable broker when I was looking for on road insurance quotes earlier this year. Different cars, values, terms, mileage etc
apply to everyone. Sorry to alarm any one DYOR.

I can see the logic of the minefield for an insurer.....

Wheels/Suspension stolen is it covered ?
Chassis' stolen whilst getting repaired ?
Engine stolen whilst lifted out.. ?

Certainly a lot easier for them to get out and say "roadworthy" and MOT etc..

There is only one thing in life worse than not owning a DeLorean.
Owning one which is not running...

Yes but loads will be mot exempt next year, so figure that out. I just can’t see the logic at all. It makes no difference to an insurance company whether it’s on sorn or not. Just makes no sense

Good yeah. It's all back together again as of about 2 weeks ago. I started at the beginning of September last year, so almost a year to the day. I suffered mission creep, but we all expect that eh. :D The only thing still not on the car is the accumulator for the A/C. I've left that off on purpose until i'm at the 11th hour before finally getting the system oiled and gassed up. I've test fitted it of course, to make sure i'm good. But then took it right back off again to try and save the desiccant since I wasn't ready to vac the system yet.

I should probably be getting on with refurbing the rear suspension, but after a year of working on the car now, I want to take some time out on the car, so the rear suspension can wait until after Eurofest now.

Sounds good progress

Let’s hope Eurofest does happen in 2022 then!
