Culloden Hotel Auction Thurs 14th Sept 1982

Postby A Van » Thu Dec 31, 2020 9:44 am

In 1982 two NIC ( Northern Ireland Carriers) transporters with six cars on each were on their way to the docks.
NIC management upon hearing that the factory had closed or gone into receivership ( unsure on this point) the drivers were instructed to return to the NIC compound with the cars on board.

The receivers took court action to recover the cars but lost , so they were auctioned to recover funds.

Eric Cairns was the auctioneer ( who also was the auctioneer at the DMC staff reunion also held in the Stewart suite Culloden Hotel , May 2015 )

Until very recently the exact vin numbers sold at the auction was not known, but an ex DMCL employee Rob Cook who was present recorded them and has shared the information.

Thanks to Robert Lamrock who was also present at the auction, incidentally so was Keith McCracken.

Some footage of this auction can be seen on the DeLorean “Car Crash” documentary.

Attached are some photos of the brochure, and the vin numbers plus purchase price.

Please note they were fully completed cars to US spec.Image

What is interesting is Vin 11133

This is purportedly the only “Euro spec” car to leave the factory.

Only all these cars were on their way to the USA, so any work done must have been completed after purchase?

One theory is Gerry Castle carried out the work as it is very similar to the RHD that he was involved in getting registered in the UK, rubbolights etc.

The different fuel tank may well have been a requirement to get the the car registered in GB at that time.

Why the huge range in prices between the cars? You'd have expected them to all go for around the same, surely... unless the difference was in desirability of manuals vs autos?

I've got an Autocar from 1982 here - this is what that kind of money would have bought you in the UK as an alternative:

Renault Fuego GTX: £7,995
Ford Capri 2.8i: £8,125
Lancia Montecarlo: £8,990
Toyota Celica Supra 2.8i: £9,888
Alfa Romeo GTV6: £10,250

DELOREAN: £11,000 (ish, on average here)

Porsche 944 Lux: £13,390
TVR Tasmin: £13,824
Lotus Esprit S3: £13,979
Audi Quattro (LHD): £15,037
Mercedes 280SL: £16,930
Lotus Esprit Turbo: £17,472
Porsche 911 SC: £17,686
BMW 628CSi: £17,895
Maserati Merak: £18,987
Jaguar XJS HE: £19,708
Ferrari 308GTBi: £21,810

Compared against that lot, the DeLorean at this price really wasn't bad value IMO

Decision to paint the car for no reason other than fingerprints probably hasn't aged so well

Does anyone know if this car is still around?
