Info on Outer Styling

Postby willgoldstone » Sun Mar 07, 2021 10:28 am

Hey folks

As a future owner I am looking at the various examples online and starting to wonder about the outer aspects of the Delorean that seem to change. Is there a thread or page that breaks this stuff down?

I understand there were points at which they changed the bonnet variation from grooved to flat to including the fuel hatch but I don’t know what order things went in and which models had what. Likewise the side trim of thin black line vs the decal with the DMC logo- when did those occur? Unsure of what to google or search the form for.

Thanks! I’m into this nerdy design detail!

Hoods started with grooves and petrol flap up to around Aug 81 (not too sure but probably there abouts). The 2nd type which was just grooves and no flap and seems to be the most desirable mainly because the BTTF time machine has it (also manuals with grey interior for the same reason). The third was just a flat hood with a delorean emblem in the lower left side which was most of the 82s and all 83s (not that there was ever officially any 83s).

As for the stripes both wide and thin, they were dealer options.

There are 2 buyers guide books out there. The american one (not cheap really and a little difficult to get hold of here in the uk) and there is a UK one. Both are great books and go into details about what to look out for but the american one goes into more detail about the various changes throughout production. Wheels for example was another area where there are a few variations

These are those said books:

Thanks so much for the detail! Super helpful and yes I think I will try and pick up that U.K. book.

Good to see you’re in Essex, not far from us and where my family lives so maybe we’ll see you... in the future!
