My car is now tax exempt. Went to the post office and all went through fine. Yay!

Ok, Post Office lady accepted my application for change to Historic (but did have to be persuaded!!)

So they will send it off, and I guess a new V5C will come back.

I will then try to get my existing tax back, as I am presuming they wont automatically refund me. Unless anyone knows different? I taxed it for March, and so also now April, but it would be good if I could get the money for May-August back.

Did anyone else change the class without actually taxing it and know what to do here?

To be honest I am somewhat amazed that 1) the UK Gov didnt cancel the exemption, and 2) my local PO actually did this ?!

Cheers!

Took my v5 to the post office yesterday. Bloke looked at me like I was speaking a different language. Then just wrote ‘historic vehicle’ on my v5 and gave it back to me! I said hang on aren’t you supposed to send it to dvla? He said ‘can do if you want’ and took it off me.

Your guess is as good as mine if i can class that as successful

My post office stamped the form and did something on the computer.

Was your tax due? Mine isn’t actually due until august. Am I right in thinking you still need to tax it after it’s exempt you just don’t pay?

Mine was not taxed. It run out on the 31st march. The post office didnt ask for the tax reminder form either.
The forms are now on their way to the dvla and i can still drive my car whilst the process happens (says so on the gov website and i carry the v5 part i was meant to keep along with the receipt the PO gave me in case im stopped). Yours should get changed to historic tax and you will also receive a refund for the 5months tax youve payed from april to august.

As for taxing it each year, yes you have to but you will pay £0.00. Should be able to do that online when you get a tax reminder letter through the post.

The post office should have done some things on their computer one of which is check the car was applicable to historic status. You should also have been given a receipt which shows the date and the sum of £0.00 was paid to tax it for the year. Since you have tax till Aug, i dont know whether you should have been given a receipt. Im sure it has more info on it but i never really looked closely at it.

Ive just checked my status and this is my result...
