Systems might not have updated yet? If everyone else finds the same thing this will be the most likely reason.

I had a very negative experience at my local Post Office.
Lady behind the counter at first refused to do anything as it was not pre 1975 and looked at me as if I was stupid.
Eventually she scanned the V5 and it did not come up with a historic vehicle option.
Then when I explained to her the process on the DVLA website, she said it was wrong and that all applications had to be done through the DVLA directly.
Fuming!!
Might wait until the new tax year on the 6th of April and then try again at a different post office - unless someone else is successful in the meantime!

I did the DVLA webchat thing about this and this is what I was told:

This is due to you just being outside of the qualifying date. If the manufacture was 31st December, 80, you would be able to action this at the post office, however up to the 7th January 81, you will need to apply by post. Anything after this date, would not qualify until next year.

That a great bit of information.

Do you know if there is a specific form you have to fill - or is it simply a case of sending the V5 and a cover letter to the DVLA?

V10 form: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-vehicle-tax-v10
Also V112 form if you don't have an MOT certificate.
V5 with the box filled in saying 'Historic Vehicle'

Send it all off to:

Taxation Team
DVLA
Swansea
SA99 1BF

Who knows if this is correct or not as they seem to make it up as they go along, but this is what I was told. I'm going to try once more at the post office next week, then I'll send it off and see what happens.

I wouldn't send stuff that I don't photocopy or scan first, and use recorded delivery!

Just from previous experience!

I just tried my luck at the post office and they told me I have to post it to the DVLA - didn't give me any more details than that though!

I've sent mine off to DVLA now, however I think this is what will catch us out, not the registered date:

DVLA do specifically say the vehicle must be manufactured in 1980 to qualify, so I am sure it'll be rejected and sent back.
