I think what Derfel is saying is has anyone made use of a 40-year MOT exemption whilst not making use of a tax-free status - for example someone like Gez where the car is listed as over 40, but isn't tax exempt yet. It would seem Dan is part-way there - using the V112 form

Dan 6511 wrote:V10 form: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-vehicle-tax-v10
Also V112 form if you don't have an MOT certificate.
V5 with the box filled in saying 'Historic Vehicle'

Send it all off to:

Who knows if this is correct or not as they seem to make it up as they go along, but this is what I was told. I'm going to try once more at the post office next week, then I'll send it off and see what happens.

Hi Arran,

That's exactly what I meant - accepted that we will have to wait till April 2022 for Historic Vehicle status - - but as the MOT exemption,

The rules state - "You do not need to get an MOT if the vehicle was first registered more than 40 years ago and no ‘substantial changes’ have been made to the vehicle in the last 30 years."

Can this be done without the car being "Historic" ?

Assuming my tax exemption claim is rejected I’ll be trying to tax it without an mot as it ran out last year. Will let you know how I get on.

Someone told me once who has a classic that he didn't have to do anything for the mot exemption - he says there is a check box or something when you tax the car to confirm it is over 40yrs old so you just tick that. Worth trying anyway

That’s exactly it. I have a 1970 Ford Escort, I went to the post office to sort out the ‘classic status’ & my guy there basically said, it’s nonsense. You don’t do anything, so I didn’t. Just insured it

Well I had a bit more of a successful trip to the Post Office today.
This time the individual behind the counter was very helpful.
She tried every which way to change the tax status to Historic - but the system would not allow her as the car was not registered pre 01/01/81.
On a positive note - my application for 6 months tax using the MOT exception form went through without any problem.
Be interesting to see if the DVLA process things differently for those who have sent the documentation direct to them. - that is if they are not still on strike!

Dear Customer,

Thank you for contacting DVLA, following our conversation please find details below as discussed for your enquiry to change the tax class of your vehicle.

Vehicles that are not able to claim the historic tax exemption

You cannot tax your vehicle in the historic tax class if:

the vehicle is used for hire or reward
the vehicle is used commercially in connection with a trade or business

It may help if I explain, the taxation class Historic Vehicle applies to any vehicle manufactured before 1st January 1981.

As this isn't recorded on the V5C Registration Certificate but the vehicle was manufactured prior to this date, you will need to produce dating evidence and submit the application to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1BF.

The following documentation will need to be submitted:

-V5C Registration Certificate
-V10 Tax Application form
-valid MOT Certificate (if applicable) or V112 ‘Exemption from MOT testing’ form
-valid insurance certificate or cover note for vehicles registered with a Northern Ireland address (downloaded or faxed copies are acceptable, however photocopies are not)
-Dating evidence

You should write ‘Historic’ in the change to taxation class field in the change my vehicle details section of the V5C and sign section 8 where applicable.

Acceptable dating evidence can be obtained from:

-An extract from the manufacturer/factory record - these will have the chassis number of the vehicle against the month and year of production*
-An extract from the Glass Check Book. This is a guide to production dates which includes chassis numbers; these were only available to the motor trade via a subscription. Information from them can be obtained from most vehicle specialist clubs.

*A certified copy of the factory record (with the embedded stamp) will be acceptable only from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust (BMIHT).

Vehicles over the age of 40 years that have not been radically altered are exempt from MOT testing.

Paper applications are likely to take between 6-8 weeks to process, but there may be additional delays in processing more complex transactions. There is no need to phone to chase up your application during this time as we are dealing with all paper applications as quickly as possible and in the order in which they are received.

You can use the Vehicle Enquiry Service to check details about a vehicle including the date of the last log book (V5C) was issued. You can do this online at http://www.gov.uk/get-vehicle-information-from-dvla.

Please be aware that it is the keeper or driver of the vehicle’s responsibility for ensuring the vehicle is in a road worthy condition and safe to be driven on the road.

DVLA will automatically issue a refund for any complete remaining months of your vehicle tax by post (if applicable).

If you pay your tax via Direct Debit it will be cancelled automatically and future payments will be stopped when we receive notification that you have changed your vehicle tax class.

Please also note that there is a 10% surcharge on 6 monthly vehicle tax renewals (5% for 6 monthly Direct Debit) that is not refundable.

More information on the Historic vehicle tax class can be found on information leaflet INF34 Taxing Historic Vehicles.

Form V10 can be downloaded from [www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-vehicle-licence-using-form-v10]www.gov.uk/car-tax-disc-vehicle-licence-using-form-v10 or obtained from a Post Office® that deals with vehicle tax.

Form V112 can be downloaded from [www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/vehicles-exempt-from-mot]www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/vehicles-exempt-from-mot

Please do not reply to this email as the return mailbox is not monitored.

Best Regards

DVLA

It's pretty definitive. Pay your tax and come back next year.

This all sounds like a bit of a nightmare (at least where DeLorean's are concerned) doesn't it. The most evidence i have for my car with regards to dates etc, is DMC museum certificate thingy (probably not worth the paper it's written on as far as the DVLA are concerned) and some random photographs from my first ever DOC event showing some printouts of pages where the details of my car were listed showing the build dates, shipping dates and details like that. But seeing as it's a photograph, and not an official document (excerpt), again, it's probably not worth the paper i'd have to print it out on to as far as the DVLA are concerned.

They obviously wont accept the vin plates on the car, only the correspondence which supports that!

I guess we all have 11 months of time to try to claw the required correspondence evidence for each of our cars the best we can.

I'm wondering at this point whether it's worth trying to get a club get together of all UK people's Vins, listed, and then approach Stephen Wynn and James Espey with the list to see if they can pull the required paperwork evidence together for everyone's cars so that we can then use this with our DVLA and see if they'll accept that...or not. Probably better than umpteen personal requests of the gents for the same thing. I can see them getting fed up with that instead of just doing the exercise once, for many.

Is that an idea?

I think all that evidence is required if youre asserting the delorean was made during the 1/1/81 and the 8/1/81 date discrepancy. Come april next year, ALL 81 deloreans should be exempt and easily have the document changed to historic via the post office.
So basically the swap to historic effectively means when the car turns 41 and not 40
