Happy to say that mine was also accepted as a Historic Vehicle - the date of first registration on the V5 was 01/01/81, so it followed the same result as others with same update to year of manufacture to 1980.

Thanks to Dan for the process to get this done - much appreciated!

I do have a gearbox now, but it is on the floor - will be in touch soon about getting it back in the car! Still need to get a couple of other jobs done beforehand

I would appreciate everyones advice on the possibility of with getting my 1981 DMC registered whilst i am finishing it?

Firstly I know if i wait until April 2022 that i will be able to register the car (mot & tax exempt) as i have a Nova and USA Title document that simply states 1981 as first registered.

So as of today:- i do not know when / how the DVLA would accept my 1981 paperwork if i were to presume its MOT Exempt but include the Road licence fee along with my application?

Anyone in this position or have any thoughts?

I think you would need to register it and pay the registration fee/tax and then see if you're lucky enough to get a V5 back which has a date of first registration as 01 01 1981, and if you are, then submit an application for historic exemption and if accepted you'll get a refund of any full months tax remaining.

Historic Vehicle applications next week...?

Postby A Van » Fri Oct 29, 2021 4:41 pm

I spoke to the DVLA last week about a different issue, (ULEZ vehicle query) and I thought would take the opportunity to speak about tax exemption to the operative – who was actually very knowledgeable.

When a car is 40 years old it qualifies for tax exemption, a combination of DVLA computer systems, tax years and car registration years make the system tricky, hence the rule of must be registered before 1st Jan and able to claim from April 1st etc.

Plus the systems are primarily set up for cars sold and registered from new in the country, imported vehicles cause more confusion in an already muddled system.

Also in the mix is the interpretation of DVLA staff! They are aware the cars are 40 years old and technically tax exempt, but restricted by what the computer says – some of which can overridden by adjusting the date first registered.. this field is ‘permitted’ to be overridden as in the case of imported vehicles it is not required to be substantiated.

That is why we have seen the date adjusted to 1980, this permits then the system to allow tax exemption.

There is nothing ‘illegal’ about submitting forms, if the DVLA accept it and adjust their systems it’s a job well done.

Makes sense to me.

Also, once its exempt, will it be exempt from the ULEZ too?

EDIT: just checked using dans plate and it says you still have to pay.

Yes - you will be exempt from the ULEZ too but you may have to set your particular car up on their system as exempt as it won't happen automatically.

That's great info Al!

Re ULEZ, my old bikes come up as requiring payment, but it's a glitch. Historic vehicles dont. I have used them loads in town, and it's fine

I just managed to tax my car for the next 12 months at zero cost. I was anticipating problems as there’s an error on my V5 that states it was first registered in 1990 and the UK reg was also 1990 although the front of the V5 states a manufactured date of 1981. I went to the post office with the V5 and filled in the changes section to show the tax class as historic. I filled in a form V112 for MOT exemption which wasn’t actually necessary. It went through straight away with no issues!
