Euro road trip - what to take?

Postby jerzybondov » Fri Jul 15, 2022 2:50 pm

I’m seriously considering a road trip down to the Austrian alps next month.

On top of the standard tools, fuses, puncture repair kit, relays, jump leads, multimeter, jubilee clips, electrical crimping kit etc etc, what would you take in terms of spare parts - if any?

Assuming Arran can ship to Europe or Ed can ship in a day or two, is it worth having things like spare fuel pumps etc with you? Anything else?

Sounds like a great road trip,

If you have a spare fuel pump definitely bring one and a spare alternator belt and/or air con belt.

This was my list from before:

Duck tape
cable ties
spanner
angled grips/wrench
screwdriver
snippers
jump leads
spare fuses
spare bulbs
torch
roll of blue roll and a sponge (for bailing out water from leaks)
jubilee clips
a bit of 22mm copper pipe
fire extinguisher
bottle of whisky (to start a fire)
50 litres of water
wet 'n dry / sandpaper
roll of wire
socket to get a spark plug out
foot pump

RPM relay (or knowledge of how to bypass it and the thing to do that)
couple of spark plugs maybe
fuel pump*
otterstat (or knowledge of how to bypass it and the thing to do that)
fan belt(s)
spare clutch fluid

*a non-collapsible pickup hose should eliminate the need for this though.

Shipping to a business address now in the EU adds an extra layer of complication in certain countries, even for Ed, but yes, generally it's still possible to ship something pretty fast, assuming both me and Ed are also not away ... :)

A foot or 2 of 32mm (?) Hose. You know the ones, lots of these between engine and rad
Stanley knife
Some self amalgamating tape
Tyre foam
Radweld (tho things would have to be close to getting on the recovery lorry for me to use this)
Similarly that head gasket seal stuff? If you have to take them off anyway, this might get you from norther France to norff London.
Nuts bolts washers
Cordless drill and bits?!
Bible, rosary beads porno mag in case no reception, quarter bottle, packet of fags

On the Hamburg trip I took a spare radiator

Luckily I didn’t have to swap that out on the hard shoulder of the autobahn.
