DeLorean vs Nurburgring : How Fast?

Postby jerzybondov » Sun Aug 28, 2022 5:44 pm

As some of you may know, I stopped off at the Nurburgring on my way to Austria recently - and did a few laps. It would have been rude not to...

Turns out that Touristfahrten days on sunny weekends in summer are EXTREMELY busy, so to say the traffic was feisty is understating it rather.

I've made two films, featuring separate laps. You need to follow the rules (i.e no lap timing) if you're going to publish anything (and you need permission) so here's the public film:

And I will post the other film in the private section of the forum.

Hope you enjoy it - here's some pics!

Amazing pictures :)
Just saw your video yesterday, that's awesome, at least you may enjoy your car.
By the way, also loved the French road trip in the Alps with your skies ;)
If someday, you come by near Grenoble city, don't hesitate to come home to say hello :)

Yeah that's me.

Little known fact is there are a few stating points on the Nordschleife. I started about half way around and passed the Main start/finish spot and carried on until I got to the carrousel (about 13:15 on that video).

Even though I had checked the oil before going on track, all of the oil decided to goto the left hand side of the sump and engine (No baffles in the sump) and starved the main bearings of oil for a second or two. This resulted in ALL the main bearings grabbing onto the crank and acted as a lathe, machining the crank case and the crank. A few minutes later the car ground to a complete halt, the engine seized.

After closing the track and recovering me to the local scrap dealer they charged me over €1000 for the experience !!! I got a hire care and waited a few days in the local hotel to be recovered.

I managed a 9:32 lap in that hired 1.4 VW Polo the next day :)

That’s mad Dan! What did you do about the engine once you got the car home?

And that’s really going some in a 1.4 Polo! I did a 9.40 in my Mini a few years back but that’s got 230 brake!
