Continent-Dude preparing for June

Postby RobvdVeer » Thu Jan 07, 2010 6:05 pm

I've got something that came to mind just now. I've never driven a car in the UK. Since y'all drive on the wrong (other) side of the road, my european headlights will be annoying to oncoming traphic, for example.

I am wondering what the rules and regulations are for european cars to drive in the UK. It would be nice to see some sort of list on do's and dont's (or is it don'ts?). Things like spare wheel, emergency flashlight, reflecting jackets, etc.

PS. I would like to keep this mostly serious, because i am a serious dude in security matters. I can imagine a lot of jokes coming up on 'how (not) to behave' etc.

You will find that your countries requirements to what you need to take in your car far outways what we need to legally take overhere. But bring your spare wheel, flashlight, warning triangle etc with you better to be safe than sorry :)

You should be able to find some stick on headlight beam correctors

These are what we need to convert to driving on the RHS of the road

Some countries (like switserland and slovene) require you to drive with dipped beam at all times. As a matter of fact, they also require you to equip winter tyres and/or bring snow chaines during certain times of the year (winter?). But i doubt UK has such regulations in june. I tried to find some info on the tourist sites, but to no avail.

Ok forget it, go free on the jokes for all i care..

All i found is:

* you have to drive on the left, and overtake on the right;
* keep to the speed limit;
* unlike EU, there is no right of way for traffic from the right (which will be left in your case) because all crossroad are properly marked
* you have to signal correctly when approaching a roundabout
* pedestrian crossings are marked by green lights on poles
* you may not park on some roads
* you can be fined if you stop on the shoulder because of an empty tank.

Plus you going to be in the middle of a convoy ...well thats the plan anyway ;)

As Tys says our laws on what you legally 'need' to have are very lapse .... just bring what you would take in your country.

So that comes down to

* creditcard / passport
* bottle of water
* fuel pump
* clean underwear
* TT's quick reference guide for swearing against officers
* Arran's phone number (to bail me out after using TT's quick ref card)
* Dutch potatoes and peanut butter.

Don't worry about any of it, if you get flashed by a speedcamera here they won't send you a ticket back to holland. I've never bothered with headlight converters for trips in europe, they dont dazle people that much. Triangles jackets, bubs and all that we dont need to have here, and I've never bothered in europe either. In the delorean your not very likely to break down as they are such good cars. Ed only told me about the give way to traffic on junctions to the right rule the other month. Thats a strange one, and explains me getting beeped at a few times on previous trips lol.
