304, 304L, 304H

I know the DeLorean plating is 304-grade stainless steel. But which kind is it really? According to http://www.azom.com/details.asp?articleID=965, there are several kinds.

The importance of this question is this: I have found a good source of SS-cleaning stuff, and I want to ask the manufacturer if it is safe to clean my D with it, without telling them in advance i'll be cleaning a DeLorean with it. Small hint: I have been working for a kitchen equipment brand for a couple of months now.

Chances are its 304L as this had replaced the standard 304 during the 70's. 304 had a relatively high carbon content which resulted in carbide formation in in the Heat Affected Zone during welding. Manufacturing improvements led to cost effective production of 304L.

All other grades such as 304 H etc. are for applications such as higher temperature etc. and the production would be more expensive.

304 is a grade which is "stainless" and that's all its used for. Its commonly found in brewery, food production and architecture but if you have severe corrosive environment or elevated/ reduced temperature or require mechanical strength then 304 wouldn't be used.

Unless your cleaning product is highly corrosive or contains chlorides then the chances are your OK.

(I work in special steels)

Thank you, Kevin. 304L it probably is then. Would be nice to know for sure though!

I'd love to see the face on my client when I ask him if their cleaning product is safe for 304L grade steel.
