I'm looking to get a Sat Nav unit...........

For anything else not specifically DeLorean related....

I'm looking to get a Sat Nav unit...........

Postby Admin-bloke » Thu Jul 09, 2009 10:47 am

Hi All,

Up to now I have been using Tom Tom Mobile v5.20 Great Britain Map v605 Windows Smartphone (Orange SPV C600) and this has been great.
Unfortunately (unless someone knows otherwise) I can't get newer maps for it.

I have been given a basic non smartphone for work so I have decided to get a full Tom Tom sat nav unit that won't be superceded as quick as software on mobiles.

I had a Tom Tom One basic at my last job and the graphics didn't update as quick as on my mobile or compared to an old Go 300.

Has anyone got a Tom Tom GO range and has it been reliable/ quick updates???

Cheers

Not a direct answer to your question but I've been using a Garmin Nuvi 360 for the past 3 or so years, and it's still fantastic. Really easy user interface, covers all of europe and at the time I buoght it at least, was the only SatNav that actually speaks the road names.

Also at the time, Tomtom's were very bulky - the Nuvi aerial folds away so the unit is about the size of a packet of fags. Maps can be downloaded and updated via USB.

I've got a Tomtom Go 720.

And yes - I think it's great! I've had it for about 2 years, and it was very easy to update - it comes with a USB cradle and auto updates when you sit it in. I paid £19.99 I think for camera updates, but user-uploaded map updates are free for ever I think? A new map you have to pay for, and I can't remember if during the first year it was downloading full new maps or not. It seemed to update a load of stuff every month though.
The latest version has an inbuilt system for doing different routes at different times of day, which sounds great.

I certainly haven't noticed a speed issue. And it's still way way way better than the 2009 in-built sat nav in my Disco(very).

I have a TomTom Rider (waterproof for bikes) that I use in the car as well. Its the same tomtom interface as the Go models and I think its great. Apart from taking us to an extinct McDonalds in Holland it has always been great.

Glne can still get lost even with a tomtom though ;)

You want to hear the voice on my TomTom..

I think The Original Mr P must have been present at the recording...telling her what to say.

You can get some really cheap refurbed TomToms now with great features.

Sounds interesting !
Would they still come with a free map update and 1 year speed/safety camera warnings?

You need a fairly recent unit (i.e. about a year I think - really not sure though) to be able to run the latest version, which - if you're doing a lot of city driving - you want (i.e. the traffic avoiding stuff at different times of day).
Either way you buy the 1 year thing at any point for c.£70 from memory. I'm pretty sure cameras are £20 per year whatever.
