Is there now a shift away from big gas guzzling cars in the US ?
Mike
The last time gas spiked to $4, people were ditching the big cars like crazy. This time it has been a gradual rise to where the gas companies want the price to be, so nothing so dramatic.
I would say that the average size is probably trending downwards. Many cars are in the 2.5-3.6L sizing, but the new Mini has been very popular and Hyundai & Kia are selling a lot of cars with smaller engines. However as a point of reference, the smallest engine BMW sells is the 128/328/528i with the 3.0 I-6.
A Camry is a typical starter car for a female high schooler. (A huge lifted truck or a 300HP Mustang for the males) Ford have just started selling the new Fiesta, though I don’t see many on the ground, just in ads. There are more Porsche Panameras round here than Fiestas. Korean moms drive Honda or Kia minivans (badly), American moms drive Escalades
A few hybrids, much fewer diesels on the roads.
