RetroPie Parts List

Postby MikeWard » Wed Mar 07, 2018 11:51 pm

For those that expressed an interest, here is the parts list for the RetroPie we had setup in the bar at the club meet last week.

This will play anything from Atari 2600 all the way up to PlayStation 1 pretty much flawlessly. It will also play a small amount of Nintendo 64 and Sega Dreamcast but the performance with these two systems is very hit and miss.

Note - I would recommend staying away from the pre-built retro gaming systems, as they charge a premium and use poor quality components. You can build these yourself for around the same price with good quality components.

Raspberry Pi 3 - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-M ... B01CD5VC92
Power Supply (if you go for an alternative, output must be 5v and at least 2.5 amps) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-P ... B01CCR5P8U
Case - https://www.amazon.co.uk/BIQU-Equipment ... B06WD8ZCYX
Thermal Pads - https://www.amazon.co.uk/ACTPD00003A-Si ... B00UYTTMNI
Class 10 Micro-SD Card - https://www.amazon.co.uk/SanDisk-microS ... 073JYVKNX/ I'd recommend a 64GB card at a minimum, a 128GB or 200GB would be better.

1 wired controller is recommended, I have the Buffalo SNES controller - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Buffalo-Classi ... 002B9XB0E/ although these have got a little pricey lately. So something like this twin pack might is more budget friendly https://www.amazon.co.uk/Controller-Con ... 01EABZQKI/ (don't go too cheap on the controllers, the ones they have on ebay for a couple of quid are garbage)

So for a base system with the wired controllers and a 64gb card comes in at around £85-£90

Optional extras - Wireless controllers:
If you happen to have an xbox 360, you can use the wireless controllers with the Pi if you buy this adapter - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Official-Wirel ... 000MGVAAQ/ You can also use a Nintendo Wii U Pro, and Playstation 3 and PLaystation 4 controllers with the Pi - YouTube will be your friend to guide you through syncing them with the Pi.

There are also other third party controllers you can use with it
https://www.amazon.co.uk/8Bitdo-Wireles ... 013B61SCS/ (this is the wireless controller we were using)
https://www.amazon.co.uk/8Bitdo-SFC30-W ... 01MEFZKHZ/
https://www.amazon.co.uk/8Bitdo-SF30-PR ... 0748S3GXG/
https://www.amazon.co.uk/8Bitdo-6922621 ... 073ZNXFL6/ (bit rich for me, but if you absolutely must have an arcade stick...)

There is a good overview of various controller options in this video

Software Required:
RetroPie OS - https://retropie.org.uk
SD Card Formatter - https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/
Win32Disk Imager - https://sourceforge.net/projects/win32diskimager/

Install guide to setup/write RetroPie to the SD card

Roms (get the motion blue ready rom pack for which ever system you want) - https://www.arcadepunks.com/download-ro ... emulation/

They're pretty easy to put together and setup, if you have any questions just post here or ping me a message.
