Project "Dipstick"

Postby Dan 6511 » Sun Dec 08, 2019 11:00 pm

Hi All, so as you know mec recently bought his second Reliant Regal van which we collected a few weeks ago. Well I have also always wanted one for years but due to lack of space at my old house and other priorities I have never managed to get one..... until now :D

Anyway I had recently spotted one for sale that had been converted to electric power at some point, but with a nice solid body and chassis. So a couple of weeks ago me and our official resident reliant regal expert took a trip to check it out. Long story short I ended up getting it.

The plan is to get it running on electric power to see what its like, and then probably return it back to petrol power. It will also be done in the obligatory yellow ;)

So, a donor engine and box will be required.... a lovely Reliant Rialto that had been gutted out ready for banger racing turned up on the facebook marketplace for a bargain price. Worth it just for the engine, box and fuel tank. So this was also purchased  and is now in storage on my parent's driveway due to running out of space at mine for anymore vehicles  Of course the mrs is over the moon about all this :?

Anyway here are some pics. I will update this over the next few months (years) as I get it up and running

Looks a good solid base there. Whats the electric conversion like? Is it Nissan leaf parts or something?

Thanks guys.

Regarding the electric conversion. Its quite an old conversion. It runs on 36v, originally six 6v lead acid batteries in a box under the rear floor where the tank would have been. I will probably run it on three 12v car batteries, with possibly another 3 in parallel to increase capacity. It has a DC motor controller with a pot for the speed control driven off the old throttle cable. The motor itself drives the rear axle directly via the prop-shaft with no other gearbox, not sure what top speed this ratio will give.

Yeah I thought that, so not holding out much hope for the top speed. Previous owner reckoned 30 to 40 mph but we shall see.
