TFL and the ULEZ for older cars

Postby Daniel Shane » Thu Jul 14, 2022 11:21 am

A topic came up at the last Eurotec about TFL expanding the ULEZ and the fact older cars have to pay.

What TFL did was draw an automatic cutoff for ULEZ at Euro 4 or higher. So anything newer than 2006 automatically qualify for Free ULEZ entry.

However you can register ANY petrol car for free ULEZ as long as it meets the Euro 4 Spec for emissions.

To pass Euro 4 standards, petrol cars have to produce CO of no more than 1.0g/km, Total Hydro Carbon (THCs) emissions of no more than 0.10g/km and NOx emissions of 0.08g/km.

Here is TFL's site about registering for free ULEZ

https://tfl.gov.uk/modes/driving/compli ... -you-start

It lists all that you need to supply them.

Now the conformity certificate you get when you purchase the car new. If not goto the Manufacturer or a Dealer and they can supply you a copy of it. In my case Lotus charged £155 for the conformity certificate for my Elise, however I got a digital and paper copy for that.

Then send it off to TFL and within a few weeks I got an email confirming that MY car is now registered for free ULEZ.

You would think that once one owner did this that all cars of that type would be included, but alas TFL don't do that. So every owner has to do it for themselves.

However I now don't have to pay TFL £12.50 a day to enter the ULEZ and with it only getting bigger this is something some of you may need to do for you other cars.

Great advice Dan - I had to do exactly this for my fireblade. Most DeLoreans should be ULEZ free once they become historic but anything else between 1981 and 2004 will have issues unless they can do this.
