We made a start today. We stripped everything off the Volvo engine and got the cams out ready to be sent away. The main pulley was the hardest thing to get undone, but eventually it came loose. We had to disturb the head bolts, so I am guessing we can't just re-touque them, its new head gaskets now...

Got the waterpump and piping out ready to put the D stuff in, I left Gez with a filthy valley and rocker covers to clean up. Also got one of the exhaust manifolds off without breaking any studs.

Gez even got his hands dirty!

Thanks for your help today Dan!

Just had a good long chat with TT - he was a bit concerned that reprofiling the cams might mean that the valve timings need changing. And if they do, that's a bit of a shocker. Anyone got any knowledge on this one? TT thought Dan Shane might have had some experience with this...

If the valve timings stay as is then I'll be sending the cams off Monday morning to Kent Cams. If not, I might seriously reconsider... (the reprofiling, not the engine swap :D )

Re-profiling the cams is altering the valve timing slightly.... I thought that was the whole point.

Another (but less urgent question) - I'm going to be needing a fresh load of oil to go in the new engine.

Something like a couple of bottles of this OK:

Or should I spend more on branded stuff? And everything out there seems to be semi-synthetic - is this OK?

Um, yes... I guess the question should really be then - do you need to do any further alterations to the valve timing in addition to inserting the reprofiled cams...? i.e. plug and play, or not...

I'd stick that oil in, I'm sure the branded stuff comes from the same vessel in the factory and gets different labels stuck on ;)

People re-profile cams all the time and don't change anything else. I'm sure it would be fine, kent cams know what they're doing.

well I'm curious to know what sort of difference the re-profiling will do to power, my concern is losing torque for the sake of bhp in the upper rev range :D

There was a D in Ireland with different cams, it sounded like a V8 when it was idling :D

Spoke to Tony Woodward at Kent Cams - he says that the reprofiling won't change the valve timing - I can just reinsert the cams and go. He said that that's not to say that changing the valve timing anyway might not be an improvement - but the cams don't need it any more than the standard profile.

Dan - also ordered those bolts off ebay so you should be receiving them in a couple of days. Cheers for that!

TT - when I spoke to Kent Cams last week they said that torque is lost under 2000rpm, but improved above 2000rpm. If that is indeed the case, I can live with that - 2000 upwards is where you want it...

as you know because you've done it already, you've had to disturb the head bolts to get the cams out, but providing you haven't disturbed the head you should be okay, if you need to turn it over with the head bolts out remove the plugs first. I have got a set of performance cams on the shelf ready which I putting in the the engine I'm rebuilding, but if your cams don't come through in time you can take them, they were done by GTA engineering which are a PRV specialist. Believe it or not, they still race prep the PRV's today, and a fully raced tuned engine is in excess of £20k
