Cheers for the offer there Jay! Would be interesting to see what difference there may or not be between the two sets of performance cams... I asked for a 'fast road' set up, which seemed to me to be more or less as far as they will take it without cocking up your idle or general driveability. Apparently they can get the cams back to me by Friday - if not I may be giving you a call! :D

TT came over yesterday for Headgasket-Tec. Unfortunately I had no sugar to put in his tea which resulted in even more swearing than usual. I counted 14 'F*ck it's and 18 'c*nts' before I was also infected with tourettes and started swearing as much as he was.

But Headgasket-Tec was a success, the reprofiled cams are in and the tappets are tightened. TT seemed to think that the low mileage on the 'new' engine was likely genuine due to the general lack of wear and good condition of various bits, which is good news.

Al made a late arrival to the party and we discussed how to increase the chances of getting the swap done in a day next Saturday. Unfortunately the prefitting of the sandwich plate and sump isn't possible as Dan only has a sandwich plate (no sump) and he's already fitted that to his Volvo engine. So the current plan is to get over to Gosfield early on Friday, Dan can hopefully give me a hand getting started doing prep work to the car and then we'll at least have fascias/engine covers/louvres/pipes off and will be in good shape to roll the following day.

Plan is to start at 9am on Saturday. I'm not expecting everyone to get there that early but that's when I'd like to start the ball rolling. Any questions / advice fire away!!

Would love to have come but I'm at a wedding.

It will be great to finally get some solid dyno figures for this B28E engine with the fast cams, are you planing on Dyno'ing it once the engine is up and running?

No, I'm planning on claiming that the engine must put out at least 250hp at the wheels before never letting the car go anywhere near a dyno :D

It'll be going on the dyno at the first available opportunity - which unfortunately will probably be Eurotec next summer. Would probably be hoping for 170-175bhp if I'm honest. Starting point 156bhp, would hope I'd get 15bhp out of the stainless exhaust and the cams...

Well lets hope that you can at least notice the power increase when driving it, Dyno would be great for solid non BS figures, but driving experience has to be no.1 reason for going to all the effort.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who deals with tourrettes when wrenching, hehe.

Forgive my ignorance but what is the significance of the b28e motor over the b28f motor?

The B28E is the european version of the engine that went into the D for sale in the US (the B28F). The B28E is found predominantly in (European) Volvo 760s up till 1985 when they went to a B280E which you can read about here: viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1521

I think Eagle Premieres in the states have a B280F engine which some people put into their Ds.

But back to the original question - the basic difference between the B28F and B28E engines is power. Out of the factory B28F = 130bhp, B28E = 156bhp. This is for two main reasons - a restrictive catalytic converter and lower compression on the B28F. Most people over here get rid of the cat, but the lower compression you can't do anything about (well, sensibly anyway!).

Problem is there aren't many B28Es kicking about any more, and certainly not very many with low miles as those big old Volvos have been racking up motorway miles for the last 25 years, so I was quite lucky to find one with low mileage.

There are some who disagree with swapping out the stock engine (see my earlier thread here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=1483) but the way I saw it, I'm really only returning the car to the spec it would have had if DMC had remained solvent long enough to sell the car in this country...

Also when the swap is done, from looking at the car you will NEVER be able to tell it has different pistons and cams inside it.
