Well Chris came over tonight and the car started up OK - I think it must be a fuel pressure/accumulator issue. Chris also got clever with the idle set up and got it to run off the idle motor rather than the throttle plate. Timing was out - Dan I wouldn't bother using that timing gun again - chris's was a world different! So we've timed it up and got her idling nicely at just under 1000rpm. Unfortunately the car was locked into the scouts pound (I've given my key to the builder) so couldn't test drive it but hopefully it should be in a good enough state to get me to Norfolk now!

One other point - the water temperature gauge is reading some v high temperatures - did we swap over the sensor jobby or are we using the Delorean one? Chris thinks it could be that we're using the volvo one which isn't calibrated the same...

Nick, I don't suppose your CO machine measures HC too does it?

Your delorean water temp sensor was facked, I don't think we even connected up the volvo sensor. Buy a new temp sender and we can bung it in at Arrans, also get a new oil pressure sender (for the gauge not the light) while your at it, and thats another one off the list. Oil light just needs wiring up, 5 min job at Arrans.

What did chris's timing gun say we had set it to?

Good thinking Dan, I'll order those bits from Ed sharpish.

As for the timing, inconclusive because we hadn't disconnected the vac off the dizzy when we looked at the original timing. But comparing the timing correctly set, and where the pulley mark went to when the vac pipe went back on, it was only just left of the timing plate, whereas previously it was miles left. Not an accurate comparison but this timing light was so clear and accurate I'm v happy we're going off this one now!

So shes now fully timed and mixed :) It will be interesting to see how she performs. I think the run up to Norfolk will do her good too as that engine has been through a lot since it came out of the old man's automatic volvo

Yes, I want to get it out there and put my foot down - see what happens! Explosion of valves, gaskets and camshafts probably :D

Nah it'll be fine. But if it does blow up you can swap the other one back in yourself!

High HC's could also be as a result of valve timings, now that you have higher profile cams, presumably there might be a small chance of valve overlap resulting in lower cylinder compression, poor combustion and hence high HC's etc... I'm sure TT knows much more on this subject than I.

I'm not sure if there are any implications on ignition timings from the ugraded cams?

Idle with performance cams is always a little lumpy, but you should be able to get he HC's within required limits.

Sounds obvious but don't forget to check for vacuum leaks leading to over lean running = high HC's it's easy to get a leak with all the work you've done, a pinched O-Ring (sounds painfull) etc...

Also on the Volvo engine as with the volvo-upgraded DeLorean engines those brass screws are going to play an important part in getting the idle speed/emissions right, I doubt it can all be set up to run perfectly just from the mixture screw.

Just my 2p.

Nope it's just a basic Gunsons one and accurate to +/- 0.5%.
More accurate to set up using the cars own oxygen sensor if lambda or by finding the sweet spot akin to SU carbs....

Did you include the distributor solenoid?

The car might need some fine fettling once it is has put some miles on to run the cams in.
What valve clearance settings were recomended by the cam place for the reprofiled cams??
Were your rockers smooth enough?
