That was my point exactly - it's all in the driver. The 'banger' being stripped out simply means it's capable of surprising speeds, but it's still a 25 year old Golf and the reason he's going past you is because he's a shit hot driver who's carried 20mph more than you out of the last corner.
Exactly the same reason that when I put my ex BTCC driving mate in my Mini on a track day at Brands Hatch he was the fastest guy out there. And that included 500bhp Skylines. This pic was taken shortly before this particular Skyline pulled over to let us past after 3 laps of coming to terms with the fact we were faster than him (and he wasn't slow)...
