WTB - Autobox Parts, perhaps

Postby Dangermouse » Fri Oct 28, 2011 4:48 pm

Anyone have a hydraulic system/clutch pack from an auto box that they would be willing to sell and ship to me?

I recently diagnosed my autobox as probably fubar’d, or at least the hydraulic/clutch pack part of it. More tests to be done, but I am exploring options for fixing it. One of these is to obtain a used (or new) hydraulic/clutch section. They are pretty much unobtainable in the US, so I thought I would try here.

Have you done the basics first and checked the oil fluid and pressure?

Ignore the readings on the dip stick.
Drive the car the day before so oil fills the auto converter.
With cold engine, Drain the auto box oil out. Re-fit sump plug.
Measure 4.5 litres of oil and re-fill.
Once the oil has settled, check the marks on the dip stick and this is where you should fill to.
There was a re-call about a different length dipstick being fitted.
On mine, the fill mark is where the dipstick it goes from flat to a coiled spiral (cold engine overnight)

I forget the reading (probably about 8 to 8.5 bar but don't quote me) but an oil pressure gauge is fitted, the rear wheels are lifted from the gruond and the engine is run at 2500rpm in 3rd (top) gear.

Low oil pressure can cause problems.

Ignore the readings on the dip stick. Did so, but oil smells burnt and feels gritty ;(
Drive the car the day before so oil fills the auto converter. Car won't drive when warm
With cold engine, Drain the auto box oil out. Re-fit sump plug. Testing this weekend. Including cleaning crap out of filter
Measure 4.5 litres of oil and re-fill. This weekend

On mine, the fill mark is where the dipstick it goes from flat to a coiled spiral (cold engine overnight) Measure cold, or hot? I thought you measured Hot, with engine running, having put shifter through the gears
I forget the reading (probably about 8 to 8.5 bar but don't quote me) but an oil pressure gauge is fitted, the rear wheels are lifted from the gruond and the engine is run at 2500rpm in 3rd (top) gear. 8 bar +/- 0.2 - Looking forward to this part. Not.

Low oil pressure can cause problems.

Plan to drain and empty a couple of times over the weekend to try and avert a rebuild, but just planning ahead.

Is it out of place to promote the manual gearbox right now?

I forgot to say, it would be worth checking that the auto filter isn't blocked either !

Good luck

Try Don Steiger, we went to his place in LA in 2009 and he had both auto and manual transmissions crated up

Perhaps I should clarify my "unobtainable" comment. DMCH lists them NOS for $5700. Which is probably more than the car is worth :)

Thanks Al.

Checks over the w/e showed that my filter was plugged. Cleaned it as best I could and re-installed. I'll drive it for a few miles and then check again. I suspect low-level may have been the original cause - just need to evaluate how much clutch plate material was removed.
