Automatic Transmission Filters

Postby arranj » Sun Jun 21, 2015 1:17 pm

There is a guy in the USA apparently having a run of these made. He is taking pre-orders here: http://dmctoday.com/showthread.php?1508 ... Order-here (No I had never heard of DMCToday either! :? ). What do these things do, do they go wrong, and is there a market for them? Is it worth getting some to stock here? They are about £30-£35 plus postage.

DMC Today was set up by a few people who were cheesed off with certain moderators of the DMCTalk forum.

It has quite a few members now and some good chat, shame a lot of it is just slating of vendors and other owners, but if you can get past that then it's another good resource.

Sorry back o/t

Filters are very rarely required and as I understand it the originals can be cleaned after all they are metal filters. However it might be worth having some in stock as I suppose they should really be changed with a service of the automatic gearbox.

I have an auto with no filter and I'd buy one in a heartbeat. It's guys like this who have the nuts to take a risk to produce NLA parts that will keep us on the road.

DMCToday isn't everyone's cup of tea, but there's some good info there.

Please stock these filters to save on postage etc.

There should be nothing wrong with the originals, they are designed to be cleaned out. Judging by the run of after market parts we have been receiving lately, would you really trust one of those in your auto box???? if it fails it's good bye auto box!!!

Good point. How would it need to fail in order to trash the box though? Fall to bits and then the metal gets dragged through the gears?

I'd still buy one but maybe sit on it for a bit to see how others get on with it, selfish bastad that I am :-)

I don't have the stock filter, it just isn't there. The first time I had the ATF changed the first question from the garage was "where's your filter?". It seems to work ok without one but you never know. Maybe the best plan is to leave as is and just change the fluid more regularly.

It's basically a fine wire gauze that trap any particulates that have accumulated in the oil over time. The transmission operates wet clutches, so if debris gets in between the plates it can hinder there performance, even damage it. I have a Renault 4141 automatic transmission service schedule somewhere from the Renault 25/30. I forget what the service interval is, but when you change the transmission fluid, you must drop the sump and unbolt the filter, and basically back flush it through with any spirit, white spirit, petrol etc etc. Then bolt back up. I have never heard of one failing, I did hear a bizarre story somewhere that the automatic Delorean owners were running them without filters in the U.S. and claimed it made them run better????
I have my suspicions of anything after market from any Delorean supplier at the moment because of the failure rate we have been having on all there after market stuff, none of it's tested !!!!

cheers Arran, it has been discussed before, as Al, Admin and myself posted on it!!!
getting back to this thread, unless your filter has a hole in it I wouldn't understand why you would want to replace it
