Doing up the sandwich plate and thus the main bearings was very exciting. A first for me. I’ve never been this deep into an engine before. But apparently everything went perfectly. The cylinders on this engine look great, and it appears to have even and normal compression on all 6. So I have high hopes for this one.

I’m swapping over passenger side cam and rocker assembly next, then the other, and last the timing chains and stuff. Everything from the dmc appears to have no visible wear, it was the storage tha killed it. The bent valve remains a mystery still though.

There’s lots and lots of cleaning to do. Slow and boring work, so I try to mix assembly and cleaning 50/50.

To assemble the engine is not that much actual wrenching work, cleaning off old dirt, gasket material and every nut, bolt and washer all adds up. I guess it’ll be another week at least before it’s ready to go back in. No, more. Always more. :D

Enough with the cleaning for now, I decided this one was ready for assembly.

I thought my miseries were over, but now this. All cam lobes seem fine, with very little wear, ant literally the last one looks like this.

What do you guys think?

I wouldn't use it personally. See if the (correct) cam from your other engine is ok and if so consider using that instead.

If not put a post up seeing if anyone has a spare cam they're willing to sell or see if that cam can be reground back to oem profile.

It'll be easier to sort now rather then pull the engine out again

I have two spare engines, but all cams are ruined. (No wonder since half of the lifters have clogged oil supply)

I have a cam sent to me from a local dmc owner, but that too might be slightly worn. We’ll see.

While waiting for my replacement cam to arrive, I decided to have a go at removing the pan gasket. I fitted this in December, and spent forever removing the old gasket material, before fitting a new one.

Well here we go again :)

I also inspected my collection of valve rockers, looking for good ones. There’s no point installing them in the original position once I fit a different cam.

I wonder what is acceptable wear?
