My car failed MOT, bugger!

Postby jamesrguk » Thu May 27, 2010 8:05 pm

My car failed its MOT today,

- Hand brake
- Running too rich High HCs
- Fog light not working
- N/S head lamp aim too high

I picked it up and set to work but it was too late to get it back for a check up today.

I dialed down the old mixture, adjusted the handbrake as much as possible, adjusted the light a couple of mm and cleaned the contact on the fog lights which now work fine.

The earliest they can get it back for a re-check is Wednesday and we're supposed to be going to Hunstanton on Thursday night which includes me taking the car to work at 7am on Thursday.

I've no easy was to test the HCs at home nore the hand brake, this is going to be a bit hit'n'miss as to whether I get the car to Eurotec, I'm so cheesed off, its never had any headlight problems or brake problems, they were obviously being bloody keen when they tested it this time.

God I hope it passes next time round

My car failed on these exact 4 things too last year, but my bloke just "sorted them" and re-tested it straight away.

The fog light was in the trunk
The headlights seem like they are just blu-taked on, so easily adjusted
The HCs failed only just, but I think they just chucked some additive in the fuel or something.

So yes - sounds very fussy and unhelpful to me. Also I thought TT has a way of getting out of the emmisions test by asking where it is in "the book". Would work great for me, as my car seems to be down as a "General Motors - Unknown" :D

Mine's gone in tonight for tomorrow morning, so I should imagine I've probably already spoken too soon and i'll fail on a lightbulb with no re-test for a month!

Sorry to hear that man, sometimes they're the bloody gestapo. (Dodgy ball joint boots my ass - they were fine)

Last time I went for MOT they also failed the headlights, but the owner adjusted it before signing my MOT.

I can beat that, mine goes down as a Ducatti motorcycle!

They have tested it for the last 4 years and they're usually pretty good, they know I fix stuff and that I do very little mileage, the only advisory last time was the front tyres were perished, but I had 2 replacements put on before the MOT.

I'm really hacked off about the hand brake, it's an automatic, that's what Park is for!

Ironicaly I thought it would fail on the play in the steering rack, but they didn't even mention it

mines in saturday, the tester who is an avid classic car person ( the sort that understands) he never has tested the co because its not in the book and goes down as a visual also they dont jump up and down on it to test the dampers because if they dont leak they damp :D
They respect my car and thats what i like about them TT

James, when was the last time you changed the oil?

I reckon you should change that and the filter, and get the engine hot before the retest

If the oil is old it will be contaminated and will cause high hcs, more so than the mixture.

Are you working this weekend?

I test the handbrake by jacking the car up then checking if I can tighten the wheel nuts to torque with the handbrake on - if not, tighten some more.
