Rack-Tec :D

Where are you based Simon?
Anywhere near west yorks? If you are I can swap a rack over in half a day and even re-do the alignment (geometry).

Not quite Yorkshire, Admin-bloke. It's about 45 minutes due south of me.

Just had a quick look at a rack, I forgot the nut is pinned in place so it would require drilling out the pin to tighten up the nut, then re drilling and putting the lock pin back in.

There is another possibility as there is a plastic collar the end of the tie rod sits in, if the wheel has taken a hit from a kerb say, it would be possible the plastic collar has broken which could be where the play is.

I can get a replacement collar but would recommend removing the rack from the car and getting it refurbished. If anyone does have a spare rack maybe we could get that re furbished then just swap the racks over in a day?

The club will soon have a 'refurbed' rack in the shop for exactly this sort of problem!..however the rack we were going to get hasnt materialised, but another is 'in progress' probably 2-3 weeks.

When Darren logs in, we'll see if he still has his old one which could be refurbed and swapped.

Or like Chris has suggested, take the rack out get it refurbed and then refit again, I can help out on Sunday 15th.

"Simon-tec" :) lol

I'm probably going to be working late for the next couple of days but I will get a decent look at the rack at the weekend. I guess I may well need a refurb'ed rack. The plastic collar could also be the issue too (i think the bush was the problem on the mot last year). A rack-swap in a day sounds good (Sunday 15th is good for me!), or I suppose I can get hold of a refurb'ed rack and get my local garage to to the swap.

Drilling the pin out sounds scary but I get what you mean. I'll investigate, and move the rubber cover and see if the nut looks loose or if the plastic collar looks damaged and go from there.

Once again thank you all, :D

Sunday 15th should be OK for me too.

So if Darren C has a spare, or failing that maybe Chris N? then a quick referb and swap 'tec' on the 15th? Hows that sound Simon?

I sent mine to Dave H for refurb, cost about £150 including carrage their & back and new track rod ends, I have to say it's transformed the driving experience.

If you sent it to him on a Monday it should be back with you by the w/end

I replaced the passenger side bush (which sounds like the problem here) on my rack for nothing. Its not complicated by any means, and if you know someone with a lathe to make up a new bush that helps too.

The rack and pinion parts should be fine. The other plastic bits in my rack were fine too, although not difficult to remake, again, if you know someone with a lathe.
