Wow! No real work on the silver cunt in 18 months?!! Must surely be a record.

Only done a thousand miles or so, but that's probably enough with these things!

So I have needed to do the rack for a while. Thank you Arran, the old crap one will be winging its way to you soon.

So taking Friday of work to do the rack, that is when one sees a little puddle.....

Ok.....

So I have more or less done the rack. Not actually a terrible job.

Previously I had thought this leak was the hose not sealing, (as the rad was new-ish, so it wont be that? Ho Ho!!) and fucked about with different hoses and good clips to get it to seal. I managed to get it to a very very minor occasional weep, so thought I'd live with that.

So I wanted to get the fans off and have a look with the cooling system under pressure

You can't really see much here, but I can now see its not leaking from the hose (I dont think).

On both sides, I think where the cross-tubes of the rad meet the end tanks, there is evidence of moisture. On the drivers side at temperature, there is a drip about once every 5 seconds. Small drop forming after a few mins on the passenger side.

So to the collective masses- what is next? Options are:

1. new rad
2. get rad out, pressurise in the bath, confirm leaks, and arrange repair.

Does anyone have a good contact for 2? Is it worth it?

This was originally from Ed, about 8 years, but probably 5,000 miles ago. Do we know if these rads are amenable to ally welding?

Thanks for your thoughts! More to come on this I reckon

AND!!!

In the time-honoured delorean fashion of while doing one job, and another pops up....

What are the thoughts on these suspension bushes.

OEM, pressed into DPNW arms. Again, only a few thousand miles on them, but they are not looking great.

What are you thoughts on the state of these bushes? I probably wont change them now, because its a cunt and doesn't deserve it, and they dont last, anyway, but good for a bit of community info.

I know the front end is in an unnaturally stressed position here with the the arms hanging, but these do look a bit tired?

The spectacularly badly designed front end of our shit car always seems to be a requiring work, no matter when one last spent lots of hours and thousands of pounds....

What do you reckon?

Surprised you’ve not had more engagement on this Andy.

I would be tempted to go down the ‘see no evil, hear no evil’ on this front, and pretend you never looked at them!

Might be able to help the front end with some support braces, but I suspect 99% of DeLoreans have got crappy looking rear bushings upon proper inspection!

Hiya Jez,

Well, I am going to do that at first, but just wanted to see what others thought, and how they looked in comparison to how other LCA bushes fare....

Lets see if anyone else chimes in re what their own bushes look like? THey are not awful yet, but suspect they wont get any better with time!!

Cheers

That first picture of yours with the driver's side rear bushing doesn't look good imo. When I took out my LCAs from my car to replace the bushings and refurb etc, my original (40yr old) bushes didn't look as bad as that. I think that looks like the bushing wasn't fitted properly in the first place, or has been pushed out awkwardly upon fitting the LCA (a tight and frustrating job for most of us. I for one was pulling out my hair for hours trying to refit my LCAs!).

The passenger side equivalent looks like it's suffering the same again, but to a lesser degree. The bolt shaft looks somewhat bent out of shape there too.

The other two bushes look fine.

Just my opinions of course.

Hello,

New rad went in before OctoberTec. No leaks for now, lets see how this one lasts.

Also, just because I was at it, a new condensor and split hoses. Replacing the hoses is possible. But like most jobs, not entirely fun...

Once the weather merits it, I will commission the AC system. Bar the evaporator core, and compressor, it will be new...

In October, NickT reckoned my slightly rough running was likely the accumulator. I hadn't touched it in 11 years... And pretty sure the PO wont have been doing it ...

A good place to start after Nick's help with initial diagnosis, and a right of passage for Delorean owners along with fuel pumps, hoses, TABs, LCAs and angle drives.

So I had to leave it a couple of months after buying, such that the pain of opening my wallet for a nice new German accumulator subsided:

And I cut down (shittest!) 17mm and 19mm spanners, to crack off the unions before removing the clamp:

Hateful, but now for the impossibly hard 18th century hoses. Trying to get the cunting accumulator out its nest, I couldn't even get through them with snips. Stanley wasn't quite up to it either...

Unions off. Accumlator out, and eventually get the small tail of the accumulator off the return plastic hose. Stanley to scratch away at old hoses on the return hardline. Ugh... Finally:

My new least favourite job on the car must be lying on your back, working in a hole big enough for 1 hand, working by feel only, to hold up a fucking heavy object AND get a bolt in... Thinking about it now, I should have got a stick or similar, or tried to be a bit more creative, but Victory was snatched from the jaws of Defeat:

And I am very fucking pleased to say it appears to have cured the rough idle for first wee while, poor starting, bit sluggish when WOT (heh! They all do that sir...) So thanks a million Nick, diagnosis was spot on.

Less pleased about the distinct whiff of fuel if you park up... No drips and feels dry, but cant get a look. Will be going back under to see where the weep is. Maybe when I do the angle drive, which also failed recently of course. I think this failure was due to the fact the front left wheel having turned, this causing the internals to explode again.

I want a Speedhut Speedbox, but am not quite up for the wallet bit. Have a fucking great GPS speedo solution on an old bike, works a treat and is very discreet.

Cheers

I completely forgot about this. I'm relieved that the diagnosis was OK. A step in the right direction. Don't reach for the gallon and match just yet.. ;)

OK, got under and there was a tiny amount of moisture on the accumulator union to the soft line (19mm nut) Enough to smell obviously. After removing the hard line for access, the cut down 19mm spanner got a little bit more on that union, and checked all the jubilee clips just to be sure.

All done, no smell!

Too angry to discuss the angle drive and (poor) replacement inner I got Speedograph to make up. Am going to bite the bullet and buy a speedbox and leave it at that.

Will update!
