Bent Tabs worn TAs

Postby DJK73 » Wed Jan 06, 2016 12:25 am

Thought I would share this
As some of you may know from the last meet I've had a problem with my steering
I've since replaced the rack, rack rubbers and overhauled the front suspension fitted polybushes to the ARB and new standard bushes to the LCAs along with new top and bottom ball joint and wheel bearings
My D drove a lot better after that lot but some thing was still not right!
So I've took the rear suspension to bits
I've found I had bent TABs and they were seized in.I had to cut them off and damaged the face that the shims meet in the process
However as you will see the face was already worn, you can see where the shims have been fretting
I've welded it up and I'm going to machine it back to new.
I'm also going to fit new bushes all round
Then get it 4 wheel aligned
Ive been reading a thread about hunter alignment and I've downloaded the tech bulletin with the alignment spec in preparation
There is an alignment place near me that has the super tracker 4 wheel laser alignment kit
Has anybody used this or should I stick to hunter?
Ill try and keep you posted on how it goes

Cheers

Dan

Check that your rear wheels are fully straight when spun as the "super tracker" suits on the wheel rim direct. Also, the results depend on the operator as the "technician" will usually set the thrust angle of the front without doing the rears . You can't do this on the D as the front and rear have different track widths. As per the supet tracker manual, with adjustable rear alignment (ie the D used shims) the laser parts need to be put on the rear wheels to align then to the imaginary centre line of the car first.

I'd get it done on a hunter in your case, but make sure that the rim runout compensation and 3rd angles ate included in the settings first to include castor angles

Make sure that the front of the D chars is 135-140mm from the floor. This should be weighted down in the on the oem springs but with lowered springs aim for the fuel tank to be half full.

Give me a call if I haven't explained it fully

So i have nearly finished the drivers side, I got off all the loose epoxy then cleaned and rubbed down, coated the rusty bits with POR15 then rubbed down again and blended in with the epoxy, followed by some POR 15 Etch primer and then a cosmetic top coat of Holts Ford grey number2
The Link arms, drive shaft, and spring cup were blasted and powder coated satin black
The spring was rubbed down and primed and painted Gloss black
The Hub carrier was blasted and painted with Aluminium VHT
New bushes, new radius bush, new tabs and new wheel bearing fitted
I have took apart the passenger side now
The TAB came out in one piece this time but again the nut was loose and you can see that the shims were hanging out!

Ill do the same to this side and take some more pics

Cheers

Dan

I have now finished the rear suspension overhaul
I ended up fitting new brake discs, pistons, seals, pads and handbrake pads
I have yet to get the alignment done but I took it out for a quick test drive and it drove really nice the shaking has gone and it feels so much better on the road just need to get it aligned now

Cheers Dan
