Yeah weird. The only thing I can think of is that it's a replacement din bracket and its dimensions might be a bit off.

Back with the car tomorrow. I'll get some pictures then. Cheers.

Same as mine, I can fit my fingers in that gap.
Me too I have an early vin with DIN stereo (which was fitted in New Mexico by previous owner), but OEM bracket was just cut out :(

Think I'm going to fabramacobble a couple of brackets to pull the front down. don't think there's any way of fitting it properly otherwise. Photos:

Rear door cards are in. Centre console is installed. as are the two knee pads either side. used the mounting on the driver's side knee pad that attaches to the centre console to pull it down towards the dash and din. there's still a gap, but it's more uniform and looks good.

installed the clutch hose today. not as bad as i thought it'd be on my back. although i spent probably the same amount of time attempting to bleed the thing before i gave up. Think the non return valve on the bleeder is bust. it'll bleed about an inch (inside the pipe) then will creep back. the thing worked OK on the brakes.
pics to follow.

cheers
Dave.
