Cam confusion settled, the dmc and Volvo cams are identical. I somehow thought the dmc had a B27F...

This means I have a set of good cams and rocker assembly, and it also means more work. The good news is that I’ve figured out a way to replace cams and the rocker assembly without undoing the head bolts.

I’ve practiced on my broken Volvo engine.

The timing cover is off the B28E, and one chain tensioner is loose. The oil pump chain is also very loose .

At least you've got all the parts to make one good engine

I do. And I’m steering clear of removing heads. Hopefully. Fingers crossed.

Today I had great fun and smooth progress :)

I removed the rocker shafts and the whole assembly along with the cams on my B28E. Everything went super smooth, much thanks to my training session on the spare engine.

The oil galleries on the rocker shaft were not clogged, so hopefully oil starvation isn’t a generic problem on this engine.

The low mileage dmc engine cams have no visible wear, so hopefully the two combined will make a great engine.

The only “problem “ I ran into was related to my engine stand. It is attached to the sandwich plate, thus no replacing that while the engine is on the stand.

I prefer working with the engine on the stand, so I’ll save the bottom end for last.

Next thing is pulling the old engine, and start moving good parts. Once the top end is done, I’ll flip it up side down, and swap the lower part over.

I do not want to install the intake with the engine out of the car, because that way I won’t get to the clutch slave. At least that’s my plan for now.

So I’ll drain the fluids, loosen the motor and transmission mounts, shift linkage, clutch slave, wiring harness, get a crane and pop the old bugger out!

Sounds like fun! Except draining the coolant. I loath that.

Don't throw parts away, someone may want them and you'll feel good about not wasting them :D they might be useful for core parts or for cam regrinds if someone wants a performance can doing etc

I recommend that the rockers follow the same cam as they will have worn together

Keep sending the pictures, all good stuff

OK, I’ll put them in the “dungeon” for now.

I own 3 classics and 5 cars in total, and I have so many parts for all of them, laying everywhere, so it’s a constant battle finding space and keeping everything organized. The 3 PRV engines alone lead to a massive pile up of parts.

I guess many of you can relate to the “hunting and gathering “ :)

You could try taking the engine and transmission out in one, that's how I did it

I will. I just have to figure out the optimal way of detatching the shift linkage and transmission mounts from the transmission casing.

Tonight I cleared everything out of the way in the engine bay, and undid the driveshafts.

The shift mechanism and the transmission mount are the only things attached now.

I need to get a crane .

Some photos of the original engine that I finally gave up on.

Hi Gruffalo

if you are going full Volvo I would advise a free flow exhaust system to get the max out the engine, the club one is very good, I have it on my Volvo set up and would recommend it

cheers
