Front indicator functionality legality

Postby Rissy » Tue Mar 27, 2018 1:57 pm

So another year, another MOT. Lexi passed her MOT on Friday.....just.

A grumbling point.....again, is indicators. I was nearly failed for the front indicators flashing bright-dim-bright (with side lights on of course) instead of on-off-on, like the back do. I know the deal. I understand the functionality. I had to explain this to my MOT man. What I want to know and understand is the legality point of view on this. Is it, or is it not legal for these cars front indicators to be doing this? I'm quite frankly fed up being pulled up for things on MOT's which no other owner seems to be. The good news is, that's the last time my car will be MOT'd in Scotland at that garage. Next year, I have to start the knowledge-base with a new MOT tester all over again in Rugby.

Thanks in advance for any help

Not an answer to your question on legality, but I always think that when it comes to passing the MOT, do what the man wants, as his word is law in that little kingdom.

(Or If he wants to fail you, he will)

So a nice way round it, if he objects, is a little bit of lecky tape over the low-current contact on the bulb. Thus on-off indicators, no yellow light at the front of the car, and a pass (presuming of course that you have sidelight bulbs fitted in the headlights.

Standard fit bulbs for the front bumper indicators are dual filament (BA15D). One filament does the "running light" and the other is for the indicator purpose. So both purposes are emitted from the same bulb within the same housing behind the same lense. It wouldn't be possible to tape over one but not the other. I guess that's why the RHD cars have the dual colour lenses in the bumper. They must also have the circuits separated out - one for white running lights and the other amber for indicating. I looked at a site illustrating the MOT rules, and the only thing i could find which might be interpreted as a possible failure is the following wording:

Reason for rejection:
"h. adversely affected by the operation of another lamp e.g. dual function lamps on foreign vehicles."

I wonder if that's what is being referred to by the guy. It's not clear. That's why i was asking if anyone knows for sure....?

Ok.... Thats what I did to get a pass when my MOT suggested he didn't like a yellow runing light. Just saying!

I also sourced the lada indicators but never fitted them. I made up tails to fit into the exiting bulbholders, which then split off the side light and indicator functions, so if I wanted to fit them I wouldnt have to butcher any witing- simply plug in to the existing bulb holder, which then splits off the function to two separate bulbs in the Lada unit..

Not used them tho, as my MOT is always ok down here...

That's a really great tip. Thanks for your help.

Any chance you can show me a photo of how you've done that?

You can buy the tails on ebay, but I think I had to get them from the US (staggered pins on the male "bulb" fitment)

I have them "just in case" but they would only be on for a morning till I got the ticket! !

Cheers

I think you have also been unlucky with your tester...

Some owners don’t even get a fog light check! I expect when you move and get a different garage/tester it will be a lot easier.

Thanks for that. I couldn't remember the exact bulb type without looking. If it's the offset pin type (on bulb), then they're called BAY15D instead of BA15D. Just for future appreciation.

So how did you tape out your running lights to get through your MOT if you've not used the lada ones yet?

I suspect you're right. It was very stressful blagging my way through each of the reasons he wanted to fail me. Me using the car for my sisters wedding next month, and even just finally moving the car south in May was in my mind slipping away before my eyes. I'm just glad I managed to convince him. It's always been the same at that garage, except this was a new guy I'd never dealt with before. So I really had no idea what the overall outcome was until he literally asked to be paid. I also got charged the full legal amount for the privilege of the test. £54.85! Aye, good one.
