Got a small bit more done, further stripping of remaining ancillaries and disconnected the gearbox, Interestingly missing the third inspection plate for the bottom of bell housing to block..probably rusted away lol!

Some more progress.. Confirmed head gasket gone on cylinder 1. My thinking was confirmed the gasket being 37 years old or so had erroded away and given up /broken away enough to allow the coolant to seep into the combustion chamber and allow the combustion chamber gasses to go into the cooling system, not a big leak which is why I think it was so confusing as whether it was gone 100% or not..

learned alot more about the symptoms and methods of testing to confirm a head gasket which is a positive at least!

You can see where the coolant has "cleaned" the valve and surrounding area all the rest of the 5 ports where like the 2nd pic

Blue rtv that got in to the system and clogged an area, not 100% sure how that got in, but shows the danger of it if not used correctly!

Good points :
all head bolts came out, thankfully none broke in the block.
piston and liners all seem good to..
Bad points:
Crank pulley seized would not come off and play ball tried everything short of dynamite! so unfortunately had to be cut off, o well

In summary the head gasket looks to be original never been changed before, the head once free from all bolts still had to be coerced (nicely) off due to being together for so long.. The coolant passages around head and liners badly clogged so the system was under alot of stress as it was

Next is to get bottom end stripped and heads stripped to see if there s any warpage on the head surface or crank journals and then see how bad the block rot is and go from there.
Also have to somehow get the mutated seized engine mount studs out of the block!

Onwards and upwards as they say!

How did the oil find its way into the intake?

Car would overheat at idle, fans would come on but stay on and temp would rise and not come Down unless it was revved..
Whilst driving temp would be ok on the gauge but spit coolant out the overflow on the road leaving a trail especially when accelerating hard.
Whenever I Bled the rad the air would come back into it
Done a 'sniff test' and it failed that, passed all the other tests.

My thinking is the car didn't blow its gasket thru lack of coolant or overheatingt etc, more like its age related. The gasket has 37 years on it and I think its a weep that started few years ago and has now gotten big enough to be a problem...
We ll see soon enough when it's stripped down

Smell of coolant out of exhaust travelling behind not mad but noticeable and also towards the end oil in the intake manifold which was never there before :(
