Just a wee update to this - engine has been refitted and I'm putting a few miles on it every so often to see what's going to break. Thankfully no fires yet but there have been a few headaches along the way - big one was the head gaskets - the cheap set on dgo leaked immediately, so pulled the heads off and fitted the quality ones they sell (the difference between the two is staggering)
Oh, also decided to try a Weber 38 after finding a carb manifold. Engine pulls very well and it makes a lovely induction noise. I now use a manual fuel pump bolted to the passenger cylinder head, and the engine wiring loom has been reduced drastically.

Drive seals are proving to be a pain to seal up on the gearbox, so have to look at that again but so far very happy with it - will keep putting on the miles. For the first time in nearly 20 years of dmc ownership, I don't have to top up the coolant every 3 minutes
