Vin #4087 Engine rebuild

Postby dmc4087 » Mon Nov 11, 2019 12:05 pm

Hi all,

Just thought id share some photos of my engine rebuild. The engine was removed back in June 2017 due to overheating - the idea was to hopefully have a quick head gasket change and get back on the road, but it wasn't to be...

So the block was stripped completely to see what I was to be left with. I had everything vapour blasted which brought everything up like new.

While the block looked good on the outside, unfortunately it wasn't the same on the inside.

At this point I wasn't sure what to do with it. I have now discovered that JL Engineering (I think) can fix liner rot, but at the time I went down the route of using Devcon epoxy. I was never happy with the result, and I knew I'd always be waiting on the liner seal failing, so I decided to go looking for a replacement block.

I ended up getting a block from Martin G, its out of a 1985 Renault Atmo. Z6W engine code. It has a different oil pump and uses a slightly different oil filter but that didn't bother me too much.

Bit manky, but solid. The delivery company dropped the parcel for good measure, breaking off a waterpump mounting attachment. 180 pounds later, that was welded back on with the face machined down...

Then had that blasted

While that was going on, we discovered the heads and cams were warped. So I got a replacement set from Tom Reddaway.

I had those sent away for cleaning too, then lapped the valves in.

So this is how it looks at the minute - the mechanic putting it together, Eddie Cooper, has done a few of them now and his work is top notch. Great attention to detail, and has kept me right through the whole thing.
